My ninth Primus show.  Took the bus from Edmonton to Calgary the morning of.  We hung around the loading doors a while before doors to the show were open and ran into Primus again.  "You guys made it," said Ler as we told them in Edmonton we'd be in Calgary too.  We gave Jay two more j's, which he seemed to not only appreciate, but may have also inspired this night's setlist cartoon for the first set.  The venue is part of a university campus and most of the people I spoke to weren't going to the show, just coming or going to class.  We left a pile of empties by the garbage can closest to the tour bus and got in line once the doors were open.

This show was very different from the Edmonton show.  Possibly the better of the two.  Being a general admission show, there were no seats, which created a higher energy level and the band seemed a little more lively.  The previous night, everyone sat down the entire show less the encore, which was nice for recording.  I was going to try to video tape the Calgary show but gave up after getting the first song.  Too many heads in the way and my arms were very tired from holding this heavy camera the night before for the duration of the show.  There were no drinks allowed in the hall itself, which meant everyone was getting well liquored before hand and in the beer garden.  The crowd was very noisy and less respectful than Edmonton, moreso during the second set.  You could tell a lot of people there weren't necessarily big Primus fans, but took it upon themselves to see the first 3D rock tour.  They also had the merch booth inside the venue as opposed to the lobby, which is more of a hallway/passage to the food court and outside.

I was probably about 12 rows back from the stage, dead centre.  The sound was great, and looking at the venue before hand I had doubts being that's its basically a cinderblock hall.  Between the Heckler and My Name is Mud, there was some noodling which was very similar to Cosmic Highway but not the real deal.  I didn't get the first setlist, but got a picture of it.  Afterwards I got the second setlist and one of Ler's guitar picks.  Also included are some pictures I took.

Recorded from front row, stage left, directly in front of Les. Since I was on Les's side of the stage, Larry's guitar isn't as loud as the drums/bass, but it's still hearable!
I'm including a few pictures from the show just to show how intimate of a setting it was.  Les makes a joke about how Tim will be able to play the intro of a particular song on the kit he was using, so seeing a picture of it will make it make more sense.
Bryan Kehoe described the show as being like watching them record Suck On This! back in the day in Berkeley.
NOTE: Immediately before Tim came out, Les played a set with Bryan Kehoe on guitar, Tim Soya on drums, and Larry LaLonde joinging on guitar midway through.  I'll have that set up in the next couple days and I will link it in the comments and description.

"Primus & the Chocolate Factory"

This was my tenth time seeing Primus, and first time seeing Tim 'Herb' Alexander.  This was the third time I would go to see them in the Bay Area for New Year's.  The Fox is basically one block from the 19th Street BART station, making it easy for someone from out of town to get there.  Originally I thought the Frog Brigade would open the show, as the Fancy Band did in 2010 at the same venue.  The Frog Brigade Ensemble was Mike Dillon, who I had seen once before as Don Hoser, and Skerik, who I hadn't seen before.  They played on all of the second set except for Southbound Pachyderm, Harold of the Rocks, and My Name Is Mud.  

When they started with YYZ > John the Fisherman and had the Suck on This tarp behind them on stage, I thought there was a good chance of them playing the whole album, which didn't happen.  As the first set progressed, the basic lighting cast on the tarp got more and more psychedelic.  It wasn't just me.  Before the show there were a bunch of skinny glow sticks passed out in the lobby near the insanity known as the merch line.  There were a handful of people who were intentionally throwing them on stage, some directed right at the band.  At least a couple sticks landed on Tim's kit/cymbals and also hit Les while playing his upright bass.  They were likely trying to get a reaction.  It pretty much stopped after Les politely asked for it to.  The first set was nothing fancy but it was great hearing Tim play the variety of songs.  They all seemed happy to be playing together and exchanged smiles.  

The second set started with an intro video by Les wearing a mask.  The rest of the set there were clips from the movie with pseudo 3D effects overtop, similar to the 2012 video screen.  Les was Willy Wonka, Tim was a Wonkavision person and was backwards a lot of the time, surrounded by a massive drum kit that could have been the Wonkamobile.  Some of the riffs reminded me of stuff you hear on Purple Onion and Of Fungi & Foe.  The laughing in Cheer Up, Charlie reminded me of the Residents' Laughing Song.  I think most of the crowd was a lot more 'tuned in' for the second half of the show and people seemed to be paying closer attention.  There is very little crowd noise on the recording as a result, and the applause was much quieter and more polite.  It was pretty amazing witnessing this all unfold, live.  There was a lot of work put into the show.  I thought it was funny to hear Ler sing a song but also kind of silly and awkward.  As far as I could tell the only real mistakes made were during Primus songs and not during the soundtrack.

I really enjoyed this show but I hope it stays a one-time novelty.  I was hoping for a two night run but this was very unique.  I didn't mind that this wasn't in 3D.  I saw four 3D shows and liked the display a lot, but by the fourth show I was finding it distracting and left the glasses off.  A few nights later I won a bunch of money on a Willy Wonka slot machine in Vegas.

I also realized that on my original upload, I tracked Golden Ticket incorrectly (it actually started in the last minute of the "Cheer Up, Charlie" track), so I have fixed that now.

Recorded from front row, stage left, directly in front of Les. I got on to the floor right before Primus started, so the first track doesn't sound great because I was getting the mics situated.  After that, it sounds pretty good I think.  The 2nd set sounds a lot better than the first set, mostly because the guy who was screaming throughout Set 1 (you'll know who I am talking about) moved after Set 1.
The band sounded great and they really put a lot of work in to the Wonka set.  They made the songs their own.  I hope they record a studio version of the songs.
