I took BART downtown and walked from Civic Plaza to O'Farrell Street both nights.  What a nice, friendly neighbboorhood!  You just have to watch out for feces and urine on the sidewalks.  The Tenderloin was one of the areas of SF I may have passed through driving during previous visits, but hadn't walked through.  Don't spend all your change on one bum!

I met a few cool people while hanging outside before the doors opened, and while waiting for the show to begin.  I had no idea how small and intimate the Great American Music Hall is until I got inside.  The pictures I had seen of the interior made it seem deeper.  I think it's a spectacular venue for live music.  The acoustics are great, and its very ornate.  The frescoes and other designs and faces can start to play tricks on your vision.  There was also a video screen playing clips in time with the music.  When the crowd starts jumping the floor acts almost like a trampoline.  The place was decorated with a Hawaiian theme, and many people were dressed in Hawaiian shirts for the contest.  I almost wish I bought dinner tickets, but then I wouldn't have had much time to eat.  Les Claypool's wines were available for consumption at the show, too.  I found out this night that Furthur had played three nights at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.  I wish I'd known as I would have gone to at least the Friday show.  

I stood under the chandelier on the dance floor, centered between the third marble columns.    

Don Hoser was interesting.  Can't say I've ever seen a show quite like his.  He wasn't keeping many people's undivided attention, but I noticed most of the crowd swaying along to his tunes.  He played a half-hour set of covers including Tiny Bubbles and then about twenty minutes later Primus began.  His set is included here for your listening pleasure.  

This was my fourth time seeing Primus.  It was like I never left the Hall the previous night.  My back was still sore and everything, hahaha.  Plenty of smokables floating around (thanks again).  Les wore the pig mask for Seas of Cheese.  Someone lost their keys on the floor during the first set, and some guy was waving them around, trying to find the owner.  Eventually he threw them on stage, and during the set break a roadie stumbled across them and took them away.  This was considered the Hang Over show.  The first set was all old tunes that they didn't play the previous night, and for the second set they were "Green Naugahyding it."  The start of the encore was Les playing Sgt. Baker solo, and not anything like the LP version.  Then during Tommy the Cat they started to jam and Les busted out the Silly Putty riff for a bit.  

After this show, I was going to find a place to eat with some fellow concert goers.  We walked to their van, very pleased about the last two nights of Primus.  Our moods quickly changed when we got to their van and noticed some idiot smashed their passenger door window and snatched their GPS device off the dash (poor placement!).  Lucky for them and stupid of the thief, there was a LOT more stuff that could (should) have been stolen of much, much greater value.  Poor dogs were inside for the smash and grab and aftermath freakout.  I couldn't stick around too long because BART was on the regular Sunday schedule.  That must have sucked, hopefully the garbage bag held up for the trip back.  While I was walking to Civic Plaza, I saw some [place slur here] running away from a convenience store where he'd just busted some guy's skull over something.  Another guy started after him, but he had the speed of a tweeker.  "Get back here!  Stop where you stand nigga!  If I ever see you again I'll kill you!!"  "Fuck you!!!"  The guy running stopped and grabbed a short Christmas tree out of a garbage bin on the curb and began to smash the base apart for a section of 2x4 he could use as a weapon.  As he was smashing the thing I was closing in on him, and when I caught up he dropped the piece of 2x4 he was carrying that had nails sticking out of it.  I guess he must have been tweeking hard and thought I was a cop (I've got a plain, cop coloured jacket and look pretty straight for that neighboorhood).  He started walking away, as did I.  I had to laugh at some fool trying to scam me in the BART station.  "Hey man, I'll sell you this ticket, its still good."  He put it in the machine I was about to use.  It owed $5.35.  "No thanks.  I can give you a dollar, that's it."  "I wanna get some grub, that's not enough.  I'll give you this bottle of wine, too!"  He pulled out a brand new wine bottle.  I just went to the other machine.  "Ahh you're going to put that five in the machine?  You should trade."  Fuckin' crackheads.

This was my 5th Primus show.  Seeing a show in the Orpheum is always a great experience of its own, and this was no exception.  It was originally a movie theatre, built in 1927.  We watched Les, Ler and Jay walk into the stage doors of the Orpheum on Seymour a couple hours before show time.  Tried to get their attention, and Jay said, "We'll be back."  They all looked determined to get inside.  Shortly after that, Ler came back outside to grab a pair of sneakers, so I got his attention and had him sign a copy of Tales from the Punchbowl.  Jay came out a few minutes later, and he signed a Sausage album and a Claypool album.  After a brief conversation, Jay said, "You'll get Claypool's later."  We waited until the doors were open and he never came out.  The soundcheck was Hennepin Crawler, and there were Popeye cartoons for the intermission, which were enhanced visually and auditorily for me personally.  Not to mention the show.  I had floor tickets for left centre orchestra in the 7th row, a few seats left of dead centre.  The show was supposed to start at 19:30 but didn't start until almost 20:00.  I don't think it was sold out but it was very well attended.  This turned out pretty good all things considered, and the sound of set 2 was much better than set 1.  There are some brief moments of talking and some asshole answers their phone during one song but none of it lasts.  "Primus sucks!"  "Fuck yeah they do!"  The crowd was very enthusiastic and responsive to most of the show.

Somebody brought a package of balloons into the show and was inflating them by the handfull throughout.  It made it kind of like an early birthday celebration but eventually I was putting them down at my feet so I wouldn't have balloons randomly fall on me or distract me from the stage.  I was much more interested in the band and the visuals being presented.  Les seemed a little fatigued during the first set, but he appeared more energized for the second set.  Some of the Sandman mic parts were too low in the mix.  As Les talked about Ler's new toupee to cover up an embarrassing Primus tattoo, Ler made as if he was repositioning his hair like a wig.  This was my second time seeing Green Naugahyde in its entirety.  My hearing was impaired and it seemed that Les' voice was dripping along for Jilly's on Smack and Lee Van Cleef, and I especially enjoyed seeing the video for HOINFODAMAN again, with the car salesman slapping his hand on the vehicles in time with the music.  This was the first time I saw Ler with the Orange gear, which I like the sound of and can certainly tell the difference in sound.   Not necessarily an improvement, but different for sure.

Didn't lose any music during tape flips, although I completely forgot what time I started each tape side all four times haha.  The first side of the second tape ran out just after Green Ranger finished, and I didn't have to press stop to flip it.  I didn't record all the Popeye cartoons but I did keep the recorder going after the show while everyone begged and faught for setlists, guitar picks, drum sticks and even a joint that was tossed on stage.  The security people wanted to flush everyone out right away.  We went out back to the stage doors but unfortunately Les didn't stop and sign anything.  Their bus left right away, and the next show was in Spokane a day later, about 6 hours away plus the border crossing.

Recorded from front row center, mics clipped to hat, pointed directly at the drum kit. This recording is somewhat lacking up-front vocals, because the vocals were run through the p.a. system. What you hear on this recording is primarily the equipment on the stage,without benefit of the p.a. system. Also (because I was front-row on the barrier) you get a few screamers, clappers, etc every now and then. I recall a balloon bouncing off one of the mics during Southbound Pachyderm. It happened again later in another song, though I don't remember which

* After some unpleasantness trying to get my equipment past metal detectors, security, etc. I made it inside the Hard Rock just as the band started their set. The first tune was recorded as I was walking in the venue. As soon as the song was over, I switched from my zoom h1 internal mics to my clip on mics. I lost about 1-2mins of Moron TV.

^Les Claypool confessed that Ler LaLonde is actually Buckethead, and so Ler does a Buckethead style solo. After the solo, Ler apologised to Buckethead.
Les had a story about Lee Van Cleef, but I couldn't hear what he was saying because some drunk with a big voice thought everyone should hear his inane conversation over Claypool.

This was my 6th Primus show.  I ran into a number of people I met in line at the GAMH the previous year, and met a few new fans as well, including people from the Bull Board and people who had found my recordings from last year.  I find Primus to be one of the few bands who I actually enjoy showing up early for beacuse its always fun conversing with other fans.

Once inside, I stood behind the railing separating the pit and the first raised level, dead centre.  While the first set was all songs I had seen live before, the band was very tight and full of energy.  I can't say it was disappointing because seeing Primus live is the best.  The second set was full of treats though.  I was having such a good time, the show was over far too soon.  I got about an hour on video, trying to save my battery/memory for the more rare stuff.

This was my first Primus 3D experience and I found it to be one of the best visual shows I've ever seen.  The sound was excellent, however I did not notice any surround sound that isn't found at a regular Primus show.  I've never seen Ler play Les Pauls before, not that he hasn't played them in the past.  He had 3 in his guitar rack and played one of them briefly before a mid-song guitar change, another thing I've never seen Ler do before.  Before the band came out I thought maybe there was a chance of Buckethead showing up, as he was playing at the GAMH on the 31st and one of the Les Pauls was white, however not the signature Buckethead model.

During the drum intro to Spegetti Western, a roadie came out after Jay signaled for somebody, and right after Les adjusted the hi-hat clutch to a more open position.  Jay then dropped it and re-opened it slightly to how it was before.  This is why the intro does not sound super 'tight' but the rest of the song is.  The video for Electric Funeral was choppy and blurry, and it froze near the end, showing a Microsoft sticky keys message very briefly.  This got a big response from the crowd, which can be heard.  My only complaints were the outrageous beverage prices inside the Warfield.  There was plenty of drinking on route and outside the venue in the lineup, but someone like me has all their 'stashing space' taken up with equipment.  On the bright side, there's nothing worse than needing to piss like a race-horse while you're taping.

After this show I hung around the artist entrance by Jerry Garcia until about 1:00 AM.  I talked to Primus' sound and light guys for a while, as well as the Warfield security, and I think Ler's wife too if I'm not mistaken.  I mentioned seeing them at 5 other shows, and had some CD covers that had been signed by Ler and Jay.  They realized I might know a thing or two.  I still had my mics set up and they totally spotted them, but evidently Les & Co. don't mind people taping, they  explained its the change in management that does mind.  I bumped into Jay right after the show but he seemed in a hurry to get back inside and I already had his autographs.  After a while they not only got me the setlists from this night, but brought my CD covers in for Les to sign.  Diego brought them back out unsigned and a few seconds later Les walked out.  We talked briefly, he called me the "Canadian buddy," and signed my covers.  "Ah, some signage."  I thanked Les and the crew and they were happy they could help.  The last time I saw Les in person he was very determined to get in and out of the venue without interaction so it was nice to 'shake hands' and talk a bit.

This time I had a hotel just a few blocks from the Warfield and walked there each night.  This was my third of four shows in SF and probably the second best one, my favorite being the following night.  I'm very pleased with how this turned out.  Also included are both setlists, scanned in high resolution, as well as some pictures by me, and some that I "borrowed" off-line.

My seventh Primus show and second NYE run with them.  I ate 3 squares while in line and enjoyed some beers being passed around.  I ran into a bunch more people I met the previous year at GAMH while waiting in line, and some new faces.  I saw a skateboarding dog and a guy walking around with a cat on his shoulder, and a few good costumes.  Just before doors opened I began to peak and was quite overwhelmed, needing to sit down on the sidewalk.  I was having a good time, but things got really weird briefly and I had a strange situation on my hands.  Thanks to those who may have assisted me momentarily while I gathered my bearings.  By the time the doors were open I was good to go.  

I got in and set up at the same spot, dead centre behind the railing, where I was the previous night.  I was looking around at all the costumes and 'visuals' throughout the venue when someone pointed out to me the stage.  Instead of astronauts there were Frankensteins, as well as various science lab decorations.  I remember seeing Jay walk on stage well before the show was due to start, dressed normally.  He stepped about halfway out towards the drum kit before people started cheering, at which point he turned around and disappeared.  Not too many people really dressed up but most the costumes were good.  I heard one of the costume judges walking through the crowd behind me and heard her say to someone that they will be judging the costumes in the lobby after Tragedy's a' Comin'.  

Ler was the first one to come out, "Tweekers," being the opening cut, and at first I didn't recognize him because of the outfit ("who the fuck is that?"), and soon noticed that Les had the same thing on, and Jay was wearing a white apron.  This distracted me.  *Unfortunately I didn't check my levels until 2.5 minutes into, "Tweekers," which was just a tad too hot, so I patched in the H4n internal mic source for the first 2.5 minutes of that song.*  This made me feel like a tweeker and some brief paranoia set in, causing me to monitor the levels consistently for the next couple songs.  The rest of the show is fine though, don't let that worry/discourage you.  It sounds awesome.  

I also filmed almost an hour of footage before my battery ran out.  However, some of it is a tad shaky.  It can be hard to hold a tiny camera still in that condition.  This version of Pressman was intense!  My pineal gland was being "tickled".  I bursted out into a (silent) laughing fit during the game show/costume contest part of the show, which does not affect the audio recording.  I was practically in tears at points, it was that funny (to me).  It was like a parody of the Price is Right, Shane LaLonde was doing the exact hand motions that the ladies on Price is Right do when showing off items (afterall she is/was one of them).  That and Les' descriptions of the products and calling out the "brown-noser" were definitely what triggered most the laughter.  It was done to perfection, as was my mind.

There was a giant gingerbread man on stage during Frankenstein, which was being jabbed by two guys in lab coats with broom handles.  I was definitely hearing 'surround sound' this night, especially during this song, and I didn't notice any the previous night.  The video for Electric Funeral didn't get messed up, so technically there were no repeats.  Somebody messed up during HOINFODAMAN, causing Les to stop the song and do a re-take.  I'll be honest, I was kind of hoping/expecting to hear more rare songs this night, but that said this was probably the best Primus show I've seen to date.  Its tough to compare, and the first time I saw them was pretty special.  But this was very memorable and I'm sure it helped that I was in the condition I was.  I walked out happy and had a celebratory stogie in the midst of all the New Year's Market Street madness.
