This is BARN22, the 22nd release in my ongoing series where drop my rod and reel into the depths of my archives and see what I can fish out.  Somehow I managed to bag a Salmon on this outing.

There were many many crazy nights at the Wetlands...Well this was one absoultely of the crazier ones.  Leftover Salmon was virtually unheard of outside of Colorado at the time.  As far as I can tell, they'd only come to NYC once before, opening for Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue at Wetlands in April.  I happened to see and hear (but not tape) most of their opening set at the earlier show, and was pretty floored by how much fun their self-described "polyethnic cajun slamgrass" was.  So when they showed up on the Wetlands calendar in a headlining slot in October of 94, I was more than psyched to see them do a full 2 set show at my favorite venue!  I figured it'd be sparsely attended (as most semi-unknown bands would typically be at the time) by me, a few Colorado expats, and maybe some others like me who caught them opening for Col. Bruce their previous time in town.

I was proven extremely wrong when in the weeks before this show, when everyone I ran into seemed to say to me "Leftover Salmon?  Wetlands?  That HAS to be a secret Phish show!"  Of course I knew better and tried to educate people, but one person can't turn back the tide of a rumor about that Ph band.  Consequently EVERYONE came out and absolutely PACKING the place (there was a line around the block) for LOS's 1st headlining show in NYC.  While maybe initially some people were a little disappointed that it wasn't the other fishy band, LOS threw a PARTY in the house that night, and nobody went home disappointed!  And from LOS's point of view, could they have asked for a better reception in NYC?  And to their credit, Leftover BROUGHT it on this night, with a high energy show featuring all of their freakiness -- opening with a super tripped-out Ask The Fish, and then proceeding to play stuff ranging all over the map -- cajun/zydco, bluegrass, blues, rock....with lots of crazy banter from Vince Herman and lots of references to smoking illegal substances (which connected well with the Wetlands crowd), it was a slam dunk.

So in terms of LOS in NYC -- this was the show that started it all.  Huge exposure, a great time had by all, and lots of repeat customers for future shows!
