All of my own radio recordings are made from digital radio broadcast via satellite using the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) system. These radio stations broadcast using MPEG-1, Layer II compression at either 192Kbit/s (BBC Radio 1 and XfM) or 160Kbit/s (BBC 6Music). All stations use a 48KHz sampling rate.
I use a PC-based DVB card to make bit-for-bit recordings of the broadcast datastreams. No re-compression is done on the audio stream. These recordings are better than digital radio broadcast via DAB (which also uses the lossy mp2 compression, but with a lower bitrate in the UK) and in my opinion are comparable to very good quality DAT recordings of analogue FM broadcasts.
I am happy to process these files to convert them into 48KHz or 44.1KHz WAV files, but would recommend that you ask for the original MP2 masters.
