The event sold out long ago and the place is packed with a predictable crowd of mobile-phone-touting teenagers and early twenty-somethings. alt-J are up first. I saw them headline the Melkweg three days ago at their own sold-out show, but tonight they're playing second fiddle. There's clearly less interest in the band from the assembled throng and many opt to talk through their set, rather than listen. Again, after witnessing the band for a second time, the critical praise for alt-J strikes me as rather overblown. They're inoffensive, but a little bit bland; and Joe Newman's voice grates on my nerves during 'Matilda'. And then it's the turn of the headliners, who do a great job of whipping up the level of energy in the hall with their finely crafted pop songs, the majority of which are propped full of mellifluous hooks and satisfying riffs. Alex Trimble really is a silver-voiced young devil and this evening proves that he can easily withstand the rigours of a live performance. The overwhelming impression is of a band with a much longer CV than the two albums they have thus far released. Their performance polish recalls Franz Ferdinand at the same stage in their career and suggests older, wiser heads on those surprisingly young shoulders. The recording is excellent. The band played so loudly that I had to record with the input level of the microphones turned down a long way. This, in turn, served to lower the volume of the audience to such an extent that no manual attenuation was required in post-processing. As always, samples are provided to help you decide whether this is worth the share ratio depletion for you. |
