Tech Note | Went to London to see two Prince shows last weekend and if someone gets out of town for shows abroad, he has something to tell.... this is an audience recording of the friday 8-24 show. when we approached the gates at the O2 I was in shock seeing metal detectors being used to search the usual suspective sites of the body. I had a couple of seconds to change the position of my recorder to my backpack and was lucky that that was not monitored with the metal detector. Finally I was in with my complete equipment, but with some grey hairs more... I soon found out that the good seats in level one (perfect for seeing the show) had a terrible acoustic. It sounded very bad to my ears, but not for the mics! The recording turned out quiet good, despite the ambience, which the huge O2 arena added to the sound. And the sound got better as soon Prince sat down at the piano. when the show stopped with less than 95 mins of music I must admid I was a bit disappointed. The surrounding conditions downed a good show. I was fighting with myself the whole night and day for the next day's recording and I decided to leave the equipment in the hotel. can't afford more grey hairs... and you can guess what happened... no metal detectors, I wasn't even touched at the entrance I was furious about being inside this way without my recorder, and the sound was much better at the new seats... and the performance was much much better and inspired than on friday.... and he did a cover of The Beatles' long and winding road... poor old taper... the new seats on saturday gave an incredible new insight to the show. my friends and I were discussing before the show, how the musicians would enter the stage, because it is built centre floor and we all thought that there must be some underground ways leading to the stage. But our royal purpleness found a different way! After his musicians walked guarded to the stage through the audience Prince was rolled inside a roadcase to the stage... is this all cool or paranoia? does he have light inside this case? questions that must be answered... but THIS is the friday show. a very good audience recording of an awfully too short show (under 100mins incl. intro and encore breaks) but even that is good enough for the rest of the world...
