Awhile back I posted a version of this that I had
found on an internet blog.
After it was up for awhile I was contacted by someone who
told me that he had a copy of this show from the master tape.
He offered to send it to me and he did.  He sent it to me as a data file.
Thank you so muchâ€¦

It is quite an improvement over the other.
And it's a bit longer.  The pitch is more accurate.
On the first share Boogie Woogie Waltz is edited.  Some music is missing.
It's complete here.  And at the end of the show Wayne introduces the band.

The first share would all fit onto one CD.
This one needs two.
For burning to CD split between 03 and 04.
On this new share there is a cut/tape flip after 03 so
I added a quick fade.

EQ wise this share peaked around 200 Hz.
I wanted to bring up the low end some.
I couldn't do much though without introducing a lot of low end
noise during the quiet parts.  I was able to bring it up a bit around 100 Hz.
The synth gets a bit piercing at one point. I didn't want to do anything
to it though because then the rest of the show would suffer from that cut.

Below is some info that was supplied by our kind benefactor.

"The band consisted of Josef Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Alphonso Johnson, Dom Um Romao and Ishmael Wilburn.
The taper sat in the first row of the relatively small and stately hall, directly on the center aisle.
At the very end of Blackthorn Rose, Zawinul gently tossed a small ball onto the strings of the open grand
piano to create a hushed  sound. Twenty seconds into the opening of the sixth piece-- a percussion segment
by Romao that kicks off an intro to Boogie Woogie Waltz--there is an audible thump as Romao jumps from the
stage. He then runs past the taper down the long center aisle of the hall, strumming as he goes,
before eventually coming back up the aisle to stand next to the taper and then getting back on stage.
The taper used Memorex cassettes and a Panasonic Slimline cassette recorder.  Many years later,
the cassette reels were transferred to new cassette shells and the recordings were digitized into WAV files
via Goldwave before being losslessly compressed into APE files.  Years after that, the APE files were
decompressed back into WAV files before being compressed into FLAC files.
Goldwave was used to mildly edit the beginnings and endings of the files,
boost the volume of files as needed, divide the files into tracks, and to detect and correct DC offsets.
No EQ was applied".

That 'ball hitting the piano strings' is about 14 seconds from the end of track 02.

Dom Um Romao jumping off the stage is about 20 seconds from the start of track 06.

When I posted my first share of the 1974-01-31 show I was contacted
by some one who told me he had the master of that show.
He also had two others that he sent to me.  Hereâ€™s this one.

And here are some notes that he provided with the audio.

â€œThe band consisted of Josef Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Alphonso Johnson, and Ishmael Wilburn.  The taper sat midway center in the raked theatre and used Memorex cassettes and a Yamaha portable cassette recorder.  Many years later, the cassette reels were transferred to new cassette shells and the recordings were digitized into WAV files via Goldwave before being losslessly compressed into APE files.  Years after that, the APE files were decompressed back into WAV files before being compressed into FLAC files.  Goldwave was used to mildly edit the beginnings and endings of the files, boost the volume of files as needed, divide the files into tracks, and to detect and correct DC offsets.  No EQ was appliedâ€.

The drummer is Darryl Brown.  You can hear his name when Wayne introduces the band at the end of the show.

I havenâ€™t done too much to the files, just a hint of eq.
Iâ€™ve cleaned up some transitions between songs.
The music was given to me as five tracks that I have further divided into the 9.
In track 01 Milky Way and Manolete are basically just quotes used to intro and outro
American Tango.

The recordingâ€™s a little rough here and there but the music is fabulous.

It's great to see so many Weather Report fans here on dime.
I've snatched a few myself so now it's my turn to share some
of my WR collection. Starting with this show I will be putting
some WR shows out there that I recorded myself way back when
that have never been...or almost never...traded with
anyone so these are rare shows for the WR fan. Look
for more in the coming weeks including a great Zawinul solo
show from the "Dialects" period.

This show is from 1974 and has only been traded once before
and is a bit different due to the presence of two drummers.
Check out the heavy backbeat of both on Nubian Sundance and
Boogie Woogie Waltz.

The digi-spikes heard occasionally are actually Zawinul's
speakers breaking up. The left channel is a bit weaker than
the right but overall very enjoyable. Z in a very funky
mood!!

  This was first seeded by michael mee (not me) in November 2007 as torrent #170310
here on dime, although I provided him with the recording he posted (before I knew how).
That torrent has since dropped off the tracker entirely, and upon posting, at that time
we didn't know the setlist or date of this concert. Through comments on the original
posting we were able to find that out so it seems a good time to revive this show.
 It's the 1st time I've ever seeded this show. The MD5 checksum file and info are
different, the sound files are now titled.
(no other changes were made to the sound files from the 1st posting in Nov. 2007.)
  This is a good recording of what sounds to me like a full WR show and it's
one of my favorites of theirs. My first Weather Report concert attended was in
Boston April 1976, I think that was an early Jaco show, didn't record it,
wish I had. I'm pretty sure this is an entirely different setlist than the show
I saw. Shakti opened that show (that was upped here on dime a few months ago, the WR
one has not been that I've found) and everyone was so in shock after Shakti, WR
sounded like lounge jazz in comparison to me. This has some quieter playing
but is for the most part, not a mellow show at all, high energy and 5 long tracks
plus what seems to be a "reprise encore" of great playing (I know Jaco joined WR in
76, but not sure how early along). This is probably a 1st or 2nd generation copy
source for this recording. It's in mono, but it's fairly clean and close enough
to hear everything that's going on, which is alot of hot stuff. It sounds like
the first few notes of the encore may be missing from an encore break pause, but
the tape flip was between songs and no music got cut there.
If anyone can help out with the venue, please do. (I think it's at the Orpheum, but
I can't be sure of that)  It was a very vital time for WR music. If anyone wants to
add artwork to this you're welcome to. I did a transfer of this to disc once before,
(prior to 1st posting by michael mee) but didn't like the sound on it, and never
circulated that one. Glad I didn't. This is a fresh transfer and it came out
considerably better this time. (same transfer as the 1st posting).

This is a 2nd gen copy of the master cassette taped off a WXRT Chicago broadcast in the late 1970s.  The guy I got it from kindly copied his 2nd gen cassette to CDR for me and this post is an EAC rip of that CDR.  Sound is quite good but not quite perfect.  Also, not entirely sure about the setlist as there's a lot of jamming at this gig which makes it hard to pin down.
