Peter Rowan played his set and at the end, he asked Barry Sless and Pete Sears to sit in with him on a "song I wrote for Jerry Garcia". After a somewhat lengthy and enjoyable intro to that song, Peter had the entire DNB join him.

The full ensemble played two more songs with Peter before Peter left the stage.The DNB continued playing so their first set is actually a continuation of what began with Peter Rowan.

Peter definitely looked like he had a good time. He put down his guitar in the middle of "Sweet Melinda" and danced and clapped while DNB jammed. He finished his vocal part and then left the stage for good.

David beamed big smiles quite often throughout the show as Barry and the rest of the band explored different directions during the jams.

In order to keep continuity, Peter's set leading into DNB is listed with DNB tracking info.

I'm not familiar with the names of Peter's songs so feel free to correct the songlist.

This is the final show of the 2011 Hawaii Tour - for all those who travelled from the mainland for the shows - "Such a long, long time to be gone and a short time to be there". Hope to see you here next year.

I wasn't planning to make a serious recording of this show, I was just trying out my new Tascam digital recorder.  But I've seen no other copies, so here this is, warts and all.  First ten minutes, I placed the Tascam right in front of the soundboard.  Then I realized that it was much less windy up against the stage, and the sound there was pretty decent - there were fill speakers aimed right at the Rail Dancers, how cool, thanks!  The volume changed a lot there, and there is lots of chatter and still plenty of wind noise - I took down some of the worst gusts...  the band plays very well, and the three songs with Jesse McReynolds and his crew were sweet!  Hang in through the first ten minutes, the sound gets a lot better... Enjoy!  Peter T.

Notes: My tiny stealth rig this time, but it sounded REALLY good in front of Timmy's soundboard booth, and the AT822 did a remarkable job capturing the details of the mix.  Band played superlatively, just like last year at this venue, they love those redwoods..  I was late getting back to start the second set, and missed two or three minutes of warm-up jamming before Hand Jive, but made it with ten seconds to spare before the song itself started.  Plenty of wind noise in this recording, and some crowd chatter, might as well put on the headphones and pretend you're there - I think this mix sounds better that way...

Notes: Day 2 in Navarro, my tiny stealth rig again.  It was windy again, and I decided to try using the bass roloff on my AT mic during the second set in order to reduce wind noise; that explains why second set sounds less full than the first.  Again, I was surpised at how good this recording sounds to my ears, especially in headphones; all the details of Timmy's excellent mix made it to the recording - along with every pithy comment of the crowd near my microphone, which was again taped to the front of the soundboard table...

Recorded high on the pole to the left of the stage, in front of left PA speaker.  The recording is light in bass, not least because lots of it seemed to come from the stage more than the PA.  Not very chatty up there... this is one of my better Ashkenaz recordings, mostly thanks to a sweet-enough spot and Tim Stiegler's excellent mix!  It comes to you un-remixed, although I was tempted to bring up some low bass, and certainly recommend you try doing so on your system!

Update for 24/96 original files: um, they sound a little bassier, surprise, duh!  But you might still like a little more...
