Editing Notes: This is a remaster of the file set put up by Jeff. The thing that struck me immediately was that Set I sounded very different to the other two sets. The stereo field was much wider and also Jorma's voice was coming from the left channel. I compared it to a couple of mp3s and they were not like this at all, they sound like the other two sets. i.e. narrower stereo field and vocals in the centre. So I decided to remix it so that it was in keeping with the way the other two sets sound. The next thing I did was to go through each set lookng for problems and I found a multitude of sub-second dropouts, these probably arise from cdr deterioraton. I repaired all that I was able to find, there may be some that I missed but not very many. I also removed a few clicks and pops. I then cleaned up the transitions between tracks, some were quite abrupt due to the taper having paused the tape. I cheated a little with some of these by adding in a little extra applause to smooth these out. I found that the tracks that were at either end of the original disc tracking had some overlap, so I was able to make these transitions seamless. I think that most transitions now flow better than before. As Jeff has mentoned there is some oversaturation occuring. I did some eq to try and reduce the harshness this caused. It isn't an overall success but I do think it sounds better for some of the time. Lastly I applied a little noise reduction to all tracks. I wasn't keen on the way that the show had previously been tracked so I decided to do it by reference to sets rather than what would fit on a disc. It isn't perfect but I'm hoping you'll think it's better than it was before. SIRMick March 2010 |
