Daspy Notes:
Night 6 of 6 of the Ben Harper, Trombone Shorty and Jessy Wilson tour.

I did not sleep well and was up early, packed the car and was on the road by 9. I
stopped at the donut shop I was told about for coffee and a few donuts. The flavors
they had were very interesting and these things were huge and heavy enough to break
glass if thrown. That said they were tasty. I set the GPS for Lenox Massachusetts
and eventually figured out it was about as far east as one could be in Massachusetts
without being in NY. I had no ticket, no accomodations but was on a mission. I noted
the box office opened at 12:30 so I planned to stop for gas at that time. At 12:20
I stopped at a rest stop for gas and called the box office. I told the person what I
was looking for and he said there was one seat in the 13th row one seat off dead center.
I said sold, gave him my AMEX number and he said it would be waiting at will call. I
got back in the car, got to the venue, picked up my ticket and figured I needed to find
a place to stay. I looked at hotels and gasped. Everything was $300 since it was the
Berkshires and it was a holiday weekend. A found a cheaper fleabag motel that was 15
minutes away and was actually in NY. Drove there, checked in got my gear together and
asked the guy at the motel if there was a grocery store to get some food. He said there
was a gas station nearby. So much for food. I drove back to the venue, stopped for coffee
and arrived 20 minutes before doors opened. I did not realize doors opened 3 hours before
the music started because people buy lawn seats and picnic. I mean, they drag in wagons
full of food and drinks and set up far away from the seated area and picnic like a day in
the park. Luckily they sold some food so I got some dinner and passed the time. I had
snacks and stuff in my clear backpack and when I went to my seat I saw that no food or
drinks were allowed in the shed. That meant sneaking stuff in so I wasn't hassled. I got
to my seat and had a conversation with one of the security guards fully rigged up. Finally
he left to do his job. The seat was great and I was relaxed in my seat for Jessy Wilson.
The final performance was good and by now I was actually enjoying her set and knew her
music. I noticed the difference in the sound from previous shows since this is a venue
where they are geared for the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Trombone Shorty also ended the
tour with a great set. As I stood there recording the set there was a sense of sadness
this was the last show. After Trombone Shorty finished I noticed quite a few people leaving
and heard them complain it was getting late. Seriously? it was only 8:30. Since there
were lots of open seats people were scamming their way down and I had to drunk idiots grab
the seats behind me. When the Ben Harper set started they were obnoxious and I realized
one of the jerks was trying to record on his phone and swinging it around almost hitting
me in the head. At that point I decided to jump seats since the seats 2 rows in front were
open. Between songs I did that and I must have hit the the preamp and had a few dropouts
on one channel that I repaired. Two songs later the idiots jumped seats and were next to
me and then continued going forward. A few songs later they were being chased by security
and eventually ejected. After Ben played Walk Away he complained about people singing out
of tune and how it bothering him because of the ambient sound so he proceeded to play I
Shall Not Walk Alone and Another Lonely Day which sounded great. The tour ended with Forever
which was fitting. I made it back to my motel, slept a few hours then back to Boston to
meet an old friend, then airport and home via Detroit. Overall an amazing tour.
