Daspy Notes:
Night 4 of 6 of the Ben Harper, Trombone Shorty and Jessy Wilson tour.

My off day was spent in NY. For dinner I went to a friend's restaurant Legasea
near Times Square. I feasted then when he got off we went to my other friend's
bar and did some drinking. I finally made it back to the apartment, packed up
and got some sleep. I woke up, retrieved my car and started the drive to Boston.
The drive through Westchester County brought back memories of when I was growing
up. Many of the roads and exits I remembered from my childhood. I arrived in
Boston early afternoon, checked into my hotel, got the gear ready and walked to
the venue. Outside there was a little lobster restaurant so I went to get a bite
to eat. While inside I saw a guy wearing a Leon Mobley shirt and asked if he had
been to the NY shows. He said no but we started talking and soon realized he was
the guy I knew from the FRIC group that I had planned to meet. We went and got
coffee and chatted a bit. At that point I realized where I was in Boston and was
amazed how the area had been developed and cleaned up from my college days. Doors
opened and security was a breeze. I got to my seat and I was 4 seats off of dead
center. Jessy Wilson opened and the place was empty up front. It turns out most
of the seats were VIP and people were drinking. I could tell the difference in
the sound being off center (more of that later) but I sat back and enjoyed the set.
Her music was definitely growing on me although I still wish she had a full band.
Next up was Trombone Shorty and the section filled in a bit. The front was still
more empty than it should have been but VIP people aren't always there for the music.
The 4 seats next to me were empty so I worked my way over to the dead center seat.
There was a family of 5 in front of me that were there for Trombone Shorty and seemed
to enjoy themselves. The Trombone Shorty set was good but not quite the energy of NY.
After the break the seats next to me were still empty so I went with it and recorded
from dead center. As with Trombone Shorty, the Ben Harper set was a bit lower energy
than NY but still a solid set. I couldn't help but notice the family in front of me.
The 2 boys (20 and 15 my guess) were not that interested and spent the set hitting
and pinching each other or playing on their phones while the 18 year old daughter
and father were getting into the music. By the last half of the set the daughter
was losing her mind over the music and was definitely a new fan. Overall it was a
good set and it sounded pretty good. The one surprise of the set was the encore when
they played Glory and Consequence which was a last minute change to the setlist. I
walked back to my hotel after the show listening to my recording, grabbed a beer, some
food and called it a night.
