I flew in to Philadelphia to join the tour and hang out with fellow tapers Nicky C and EdTyre. We had 3 seats together and ran 3 seperate rigs for comparison. I stayed with Nicky C the first two nights and watched him build a new rig to run MBHO cards and then afternoon of the show we drove to EdTyre's place and then on to the show, Xcite Center is a nice sounding room at a casino. Security was no problem but it was a lame casino crowd that showed up very late. Jessy Wilson came on first. Never heard of her, but she has a great voice and persona that may hit it big. My only complain was she really needed a full band behind her. Next up was Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue which bring the New Orleans funk to town. I have seen them before but not in many years. They put on a very high energy set. A band that really looked like they were having fun on stage. Not that familiar with their material but I really enjoyed the set. The sound was really good too. Finally, it was time for Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals which was back to the original four piece configuration. It had been a year and a half since I had seen Ben with the Innocent Criminals and from the moment they started with Gold To Me I was in the musical zone. It was a pretty standard set list since it was an abbreviated set due to the double bill but everything was played well. I got to see Machine Gun->Superstition for the first time and all I could say was wow!!! Fight For Your Mind with the back and forth between Ben and Juan was really fun as was a smoking version of Them Changes. The show ended with Better Way and we listened on the way back to Ed's place. A fun night indeed. |
