Comment"“The most powerful composer of our time” (Daily Telegraph) performs in chamber setting with harpist Lavinia Meijer and cellist Matt Haimovitz. While Glass’s blend of interlocking rhythms and sophisticated sonorities has often been associated with orchestral and opera contexts, his music is at its most immediate and emotional in the hands of the world’s great soloists and chamber musicians, whose approaches imbue the material with further levels of depth and character. Glass himself has recorded and performed extensively as a solo pianist, and both of the other artists on these nights have cultivated a strong affinity for his work.

South Korean-born harpist Meijer is a multiple award-winner whose 2012 Channel Classics release devoted to the music of Glass, Metamorphosis / The Hours, was certified platinum and topped the rock charts in her adopted home of the Netherlands. Her 2016 recording for Sony Classical, The Glass Effect: The Music of Philip Glass, features her interpretations of the composer’s etudes for solo piano.
Mentored by Itzhak Perlman and Zubin Mehta, Israeli-American cellist Haimovitz has shaken conservative classical conventions by taking his brilliant playing to rock clubs and other unconventional venues. His 2013 CD with Dennis Russell Davies and the Cincinnati Symphony, Cello Concerto No. 2, is an arrangement of Glass’s score to the Godfrey Reggio film Naqoyqatsi, and the cellist recently released the world premiere recording of Glass’s Partita No.2 for Solo Cello.
