J-Card Comment | Jim Fuller lead and rhythm guitar, vocals Jim Pash bass guitar, saxophone and vocals Don Murray drums and vocals (Surfer Joe) Paul Johnson - lead and rhythm guitar * with 2 honorary members from the audience: Lee Azirello & Dave Bell on drums KPCC-FM broadcast > Panasonic SV-3700 (trade DAT) 2017 transfer: Otari DTR 8-s > Korg mr2000-s @ 16-48 iZotope RX4 advanced > CD Wave > TLH (flac level 8) Opening act for today's concert on the pier is the Surfaris who were one of the most popular first wave surf bands here in Southern California. Besides founding members Jim Fuller and Jim Pash, Paul Johnson is included in this version of the band. Paul was a founding member of the Bel-Airs who are considered to be the first band playing "surf music". Well it's a tie with Dick Dale and the Deltones who were creating a scene about 50 miles south of Redondo Beach. Today’s concert at the pier showcases both of these pioneers as Dick Dale is the next act to play. Don Murray is the other non-original member of the Surfaris. Don was also in one of the early surf bands "The Crossfires" which later turned into "The Turtles". Sadly Don unexpectedly passed away a couple years later, Jim Pash in 2000 and Jim Fuller just a month ago. Paul is still active and if you get the chance go see him. Besides the lovely music he has some great stories and history to share. He is an American treasure. With Jim Fuller's passing in 2017 the Surfaris are all riding the waves together again. Thanks to them there is this wonderful legacy of songs for kids to dance to forever. Cheers mates!
