The VHS(1) tape that was used to transfer this to DVD format did have some tracking errors. Everyone remembers the tracking errors that VHS tapes sometimes had - lines through the screen. The tracking errors are in the middle to lower of the screen during the beginning of the DVD especially in the first minute during which Kurt and Krist are tuning their instruments and Kurt screams into the microphone for the soundcheck (very similar to the intro of Kurt's scream found on the first track of "From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah" CD - 1996), but the tracking errors become less prevalent as the DVD moves forward. Af 20:57 "Sappy" begins...the tracking errors are limited to the lower 1/4 of the screen. Sappy's very nicely done, and it's amazing that Kurt was working on this song as far back as 1989. More polished versions of "Sappy" would appear as late as Febraury 1994 during Nirvana's tour in France and through Italy. There are some really nice shots of Kurt during "Sappy"....."Spank Thru" starts at 24:26, and the tracking errors diminish to the lower 1/4 and 1/6th or very bottom of the screen until after 27:45 when there are no longer any tracking errors to speak of. In short, the video quality improves dramatically as the DVD moves forward. At 28:11 at the start of "Big Cheese" to the end of the 57 minute set, there are no longer any tracking errors. Between songs, you can hear Arnold Schwarzenegger's (now California's Governor or "Governator") voice repeating the same lines over and over: "Hi, this is Arnold. Bend your legs at a 45 degree angle...slim, sexy waist, in, out, in out, in out...." The movie, "The Terminator," must have been released some time recent to the taping of this show because this same repeating loop of Arnold's voice can be heard on the bootleg CD's, "Out of the Blue" and "Play the F@@@ing Guitar, Man." If you don't have "Out of the Blue," you really should! Both of these CD's come from a soundboard recording a week later on 11/22/1989 at the U4 in Austria, recorded live for Austrian radio. Band plays in very close proximity to the crowd which is less than 1 meter from both Kurt and Krist, who both seem in very good spirits and play flawlessly. The taper does an excellent job, taking great shots of all 3 band members, even Chad Channing behind the drums. The taper may have been someone the band knew and allowed this person to videotape the entire show from a very close distance on the stage just near Krist. Krist sometimes obstructs the taper's shot of Kurt, so the taper shoots at interesting angles at times to get around Krist. Kurt's hair is so long that you can not see his face at times. There are, of course, some very nice closeups of Kurt. The lighting at the venue is fairly good, and there's an excellent mix of Kurt's guitar, vocals, Krist's bass and Chad's drumming. Only major detractor to the set is probably the tracking errors in the first 30 minutes of the 57 minute set. Consider that the master tape VHS(M) may have been destroyed by now. Thus far, Jim Hirte's transfer is the lone superior VHS(1) transfer, which surfaced and was transferred at or around March 2005. While some generational loss is noticeable at times, there are also some very nice clean, clear shots of very young Kurt Cobain, only 21-22 years old at the time of this recording. The taper does move to the right side of the stage for the last song, "Stain." None of the songs on this DVD cut in or cut out. DVD's lineage is correct: VHS(1)->DVDR(1)->HDD -> with your copy as DVDR(2)....most likely the lowest currently circulating DVDR generation available for this disc anywhere. This DVD is by request.
