Note | John Zorn's Masada
August 1993 NYC, NY @ Knitting Factory WKCR FM broadcast > cassette (? generation) > CDR > EAC > FLAC This is the second of two days of interviews that John Zorn did on WKCR prior to the month long retrospective at the old knit in September of 1993. Just a week after the first masada gigs, Zorn brought a tape up to WKCR and broadcast a few selections. John Zorn: alto sax Marc Ribot: guitar Kato Hideki: bass Ben Perowsky: drums 01 interview (3:19) 02 Karnaim* (5:05) 03 Idalah-Abal (5:52) 04 Applause + interview (1:14) 05 Hazakah*(7:52) 06 * (2:15) 07 Sansanah outro + interview (3:51) * titles indicated by John Zorn. He doesn't seem to be sure about these. Sansanah is mentioned (in the broadcast as in the stage announcement) but a clearly different tune is played. Exact date of the show is uncertain. According to original notes from RandyBayers, the date of the show is August 19, 1993, first set. However, compared to the audience recording from that date it sounds like a different show. The broadcast date shall be shortly before september 1st, as the interviewer mentions the 1993 Zornfest as yet to come. The interviewer (Ted Pankin?) also indicates that the recordings were made one week before on a friday, so if he's correct the date could be august 20th. Another clue : According to http://www.marcribot-descentintobaldness.com/Dialogue.html, on August 20th, 1993 Marc Ribot was playing at the Knitting Factory with Chris Wood, Sebastian Steinberg, Dougie Bowne. So at least one of the usual suspect was there. A double bill Ribot quartet - Masada is plausible. But this is pure speculation. Thanks to RandyBayers for uploading these FLAC files on etree.org. This was probably seeded on Dime by Punkjazz a long time ago. |

Comment | Exact Date Uncertain. These are the first ever recordings made under the Masada name. Zorn brought this tape up to WKCR and broadcast these selections just a week after the first gigs. Includes some interview segments. This is really fascinating stuff for Zorn fans, as this line-up quickly gave way to the Douglas/Cohen/Baron quartet. |
