October 24, 1973 Stadsteatret, Malmö, Sweden 2nd concert Swedish Radio broadcast Miles Davis (tp, kb) Dave Liebman (ss, ts, fl) Pete Cosey (g, pc) Reggie Lucas (g) Michael Henderson (b) Al Foster (d) James "Mtume" Foreman (pc) 1. Turnaroundphrase [Moja/Nne] (nc) (07:28) 2. Tune in 5 (08:21) 3. Ife (nc) (10:14) 4. Right Off --> Funk [Prelude part 1, Tatu, Unknown C] (08:43) * 5. Zimbabwe [My Brother] (09:22) 6. Calypso Frelimo (14:54) On October 24, Miles started his second European tour of 1973, this time produced by George Wein as "Newport Jazz festival in Europe". The band opened with two shows in Malmö, Sweden. There exists an audience recording of this concert, and there are two different broadcast recordings of this show. Both radio broadcasts were incomplete. This is Broadcast #1: http://www.plosin.com/milesAhead/Sessions.aspx?s=731024 More than two minutes of "Turnaroundphrase", and approximately 11 minutes of "Ife" are missing. *) Miles discographer Jan Lohmann uses "Unknown C" for this tune, and "Untitled Original C" for later incarnations of it. I think that his "Unknown C" and "Untitled Original C" are both variations of the same tune. I prefer Enrico Merlin's use of "Tatu" here, but most people will be more familiar with Mr. Losin's naming convention ("Funk [Prelude part 1]"), because his discography can be found on-line. Strangely enough, Mr. Losin omits this tune, and only mentions "Right Off (8:49)". |
