J-Card CommentNotes from the uploader (CBG5150) The beginning of the show is clipped and there was a battery change right after the start of ATBL. There were a dozen or so security ducks that were long enough that they warranted being fixed. Rather than using still shots, they are covered by using a slo-motion effect with the footage preceding or proceding the portion of video where there was no picture because of the camera being held down or obstructed. I only have one request, that you don't take these files and post them on other torrent sites. I have many shows to upload. I will upload, let them get seeded by others and after a majority have downloaded the files completely, remove my files so I can seed something new. I prefer to manage my own shows on DIME and The Traders Den. I will upload to other sites when I wish to for select shows. Thanks for honoring my wishes in advance. This is “CBG Classic Master Video Series Vol.21”. Sometimes the schedule works out great and this show was the case. Van Halen had been around in the summer on the Monsters Of Rock tour and I was fortunate to see them a few times then, but that was in stadiums and I had no idea they would come back to the area when I was seeing them then, but they did. This time in Roctober with a couple NYC shows. The first at Madison Square Garden and then the following night at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. As luck would have it, that happened to correspond to a family function at my Aunt’s home during the week in NYC. Perfect, go see VH at MSG and then do the family function, which they wanted me to film in the afternoon the next day and then go that night to Nassau to see VH again. You never knew what you were going to get at the Garden, sometimes no search at all, sometimes very minor, sometimes pat down and sometimes they even has airport style metal detector walkthroughs with a follow on paddle search. This was one of those shows where I walked right in. Nothing. Gotta love that! I would rarely sit in the seat I bought. But rather go find the seat that seems to work best for filming the show. Sometimes you would find one that no one comes for and other times the people would come after the band was on and you would need to move. I never liked moving during the show because that meant that you were not filming part of the show to get to the new spot. This show I had to move once or twice and I was at a high angle to the side. I didn’t like the obstruction I was getting and I moved. It had to do with the angle and people towards the stage being in my viewing angle. I like to stand and hold the camera to my face. It gave me more freedom and options to film from vs. putting the camera on my knee and sitting up high. I would rather sit and relax, but with some shows like this one sold like they were and me needing to find a good spot, I felt it limited my options if that was how I was going to film, sitting and filming. So I stood with the crowd and hoped that I didn’t get a 6’-5” guy in the seat or two in front of me that was on a direct viewing angle to the stage. I didn’t like obstruction. Not every show goes to plan and you have to adjust on the fly. That is one of the reasons I wanted to do multiple shows, because one night might be golden and the next a disaster pr somewhere in between. Plus, for some bands, the shows were somewhat different for what happened night to night, what was said, the setlist changes, the people around me, the security situation, how well the show went with issues or not, etc. The cool thing about this show that I remember was Sammy getting score updates to the Mets-Dodgers NLCS game that was going on that night. It was Game 6 and the Dodgers were leading the series 3-2 games and they were playing in LA. I do remember Sammy stating it was 1-0 Mets to the crowd and they cheered loud. Then later on I think he asked for the score and it was 2-0 Mets and there was a roar. The next day I filmed the family function and then went to Nassau Coliseum for the VH show. Wanted to film but it was a very wicked search and there was no way I was getting the camera into the arena on my back. So I brought it back to my car and got my audio deck and went in with that. I was going to give up my very good seat like 2 rows off the floor 2 sections out from the stage to film upstairs, but it was not to be. So I crotched the audio deck and watched the show up front and did audio. I was so close to the usher/security guys at an entrance from the 1st level to the floor that I was concerned they would see the Aiwa CM-30A mic on my shirt pocket or me flipping the tape. Luckily they didn’t notice. The only bummer with this show was this was the only show of all I went to where they changed the setlist (For NYC since they played the night before there also) and took the half version of Cabo Wabo out of the first encore spot and moved it into the main set of the show right in the middle of the show. I really liked that song the most on the album and they didn’t even do it when they did the Monsters Of Rock shows around my area and played only half of it the night before at MSG before they switched into the next song in the encore. So in Nassau, they do the entire song with 2 verses and solo and the third verse. But, I wasn’t filming. That’s why I liked to go to multiple shows. The other thing memorable about Nassau was some guy brought in a small portable TV to the show and was sitting in the front row. How can he bring in a TV that had like a 6” diagonal screen?! He is watching game 7 of the NLCS and Sammy asks him for the score. Then he asks for the TV and the guy hands it to him and Sammy looks at it and says it is 5-nothing LA. Then he goes on to say he has to root for LA because he lives there. Sammy remarked that he wasn’t sure he should report the score to the crowd when he looked at the TV…because it was 5-nothing LA. That was the last of the reports on the game at Nassau because it was in LA 3 hours behind NYC time and as it turns out, the Mets never scored and it ended 6-0 Dodgers to advance to the World Series and then win it all against the Oakland A’s. That was the year of Orel Hershiser, who was NLCS MVP and Series MVP and Kirk Gibson, who couldn’t “walk”, had the literal “walk" off HR in game 1 of the World Series. So I guess Sammy was happy in the end with the result! This show at MSG was the one and only time Van Halen with Sammy Hagar played Madison Square Garden in NYC. Even in 2004 they did not play MSG. Enjoy the Cabo Wabo in MSG! CBG5150 Posted to DIME 2012-08-10.
