J-Card Comment | Notes from the uploader (CBG5150) Neither of the audio choices are stellar by any stretch of the imagination - but both are very different from each other and listening tests showed some people preferred one over the other and vice versa - so Silver Stallion encoded both of them and inserted them into the DVD. Note: the first 1 minute 50 seconds of audio source #2 is taken from audio source #1, so they will sound identical up to that point. I only have one request, that you don't take these files and post them on other torrent sites. I have many shows to upload. I will upload, let them get seeded by others after a majority have downloaded the files completely, and then remove my files so I can seed something new. Please don't ruin this for others and place these files on other sites. I prefer to manage my own shows here on Dime and if something can't be posted for some reason, I will post elsewhere. Thanks for honoring my wishes in advance. I have been recording shows since 10Oct1987 where Lynyrd Skynyrd was my first attempt after becoming interested in trying this hobby from watching video tapes from the originals Pierre in Montreal and Otto in Detroit. Watching the Van Halen 1982 and 1984 tours that Pierre did and then the KISS and David Lee Roth shows that Otto did made me want to try to film. So I started with a Zenith VM6200 VHS-c camcorder because I liked the brightness it gave from viewing a KISS video from Ft. Worth, Texas in Feb1986 that was filmed on the jvc version of the same camera. I did about 12 shows with that camcorder and then met the NYBG at a Kiss cover band show in my hometown (he was filming it) and using the first Sony 8mm camcorder, the CCD-V5. The nice thing about that camera, 120min with no tape flip in the fastest speed, no tracking, and a cleaner picture. It was a bigger camcorder, however. I bought the Ricoh version of that camcorder (R-600) immediately and really began my career at this hobby. This camcorder was so big I had to strap it to my back and wear a coat over it and prey no security guard tapped my back entering the building. Through the years I upgraded cameras as the technology advanced, always wanting to have the best picture you could get. Next it was the first small Sony 8mm handycam (CCD-TR5), which was crotchable and really opened up the possibilities of venues to film in, then the first Sony Hi-8mm camera the TR-101. Another Hi-8mm camera followed, the Cannon ES5000 which had a color viewfinder which was really cool as I was finally able to watch shows in color while filming (although B&W was easier to use technically). Then the first Sony Digital8 camcorder the DCR-TRV730, With the first megapixel chip!, and finally the Sony HDR-HC1 Hi-Def camera which I use now. I know there are better cameras now, but I like the eyepiece and having a master tape instead of a file (call me old school), plus the manual iris. Each time it seemed the camera upgrades were to the tune of ~1500 dollars. But it always seemed worth it. Keep in mind, there were better pro cameras at the time of these consumer camera releases, but to consistently film shows and get it in, these were the best options for us at the time. Also keep in mind that by today’s standards of everything being HD and 16:9, technology evolved over time. The Classic shows would not be done if I didn’t use what was available then to film. There was no manual iris capability at that time, there was no optical stabilization, your arms were the stabilizer, I only had a 6x zoom capability and the only way to increase it was to attach a magnification lens, which I did most of the time to give me a 12 to 2 zoom instead of a 6 to 1 zoom. That makes a difference in a football stadium but it knocks the light and focus capability down some. It was a trade-off. I stopped trading out a lot of my shows back in the day only letting a few out in mixes with the NYBG as someone whose name started with an M and ran KISS conventions in NJ each year was selling my shows and making a living off it. So I cut the cord at that time on his supply (at least of my stuff). Being that times have changed and the genesis of the torrent trading world (still getting used to it as I used to trade with cassettes and VHS tapes with Xerox printed lists of stuff and the USPS), and it is free trade or free giving on torrent sites, I wanted to start two series of shows on DIME at this time that will probably take many years to let all of it out. As I said, I have been filming since 1987. Most of the first few VHS-c sourced shows are out along with a host of Metallica mixes we did with permission through the band and some other select mixes along the way with other friends. I owe a lot to the NYBG for all the criticism we gave each other to make us better at our techniques, and even though hard, accepted it. It made us better. The two series are going to be a Classic Master Video Series of shows dating back 25 years…and then a Master Video Series of shows from 2000 and forward. I don’t have a list of everything, so please don’t ask. I will get to these as I can. I have a life also and so do all of the other people helping in this endeavor. It is not just me. It never is with these projects. In time it will all get out. I can’t manage doing this with 5 sources at once. I want it to be fun for me, and those helping, not a job. So enjoy them when they come out and please be patient. I am going to do this more chronological and it also involves organizing my stuff somewhat, but this is the time to get going, so get ready for some cool shows of when a lot of the bands that are doing farewell tours now were in their prime or starting (even as warm up bands). I will try to mix it up although I have my favorites which I filmed a lot. I also want to thank Silver Stallion (guitard on DIME) for mentoring me and doing the production work behind a lot of the releases to come. His skills at producing DVDs and BLURAYs are top notch yet efficient. And by efficient I mean he delivers in a timely fashion. I don’t want to make science projects out of these or they will never get done or take too long. We have a 25 year archive to get through. I am already thrilled with what we have started doing. As for the show, this is “CBG Classic Master Video Series Vol. 1â€. Well, I am going to make this one a little lengthy as it is warranted in my opinion. The first multicam mix from 1988 or that far back from 3 camcorder sources. Not iPhones, where everyone is a filmer. We all had to work hard for this one and through the miracle of time, 25+ years later we are able to combine these sources that I never thought would be put together (Grey's angle because he vanished and let nothing out ever) or could be put together (Ryan's anglebecause of the quick obstructions of heads and hands in the way in a GA crowd on the floor)...The story of the show…I was friends with Ryan from Miami when he was 16 years old when he started filming in 1987 with his dad’s full size VHS shoulder mounted camcorder. All of the old Hollywood Sportatorium shows were done by him. In March 1988, Ryan filmed David Lee Roth on the 2nd night of the tour and he mailed me a copy the next day. When I got that, it was the first time I ever got a video of a show to watch before the tour got to my cities. It was surreal. There was no internet, there was no instant access to information about the show. So I was the privileged one to get this opportunity to see it before I saw it. We became good friends and his parents trusted me to let him, at 16 years old, fly up to the Northeast and travel with me to see a couple Monsters of Rock concerts. Ryan had already filmed the Monsters Orange Bowl show in Miami and he already mailed that to me too. I picked him up at the Providence, RI airport and we immediately went to Oxford Plains, ME. A nice 5 hour drive. Even longer with the traffic jam going into a small remote town. Ryan got his camera into the show by putting it under the fence of this old baseball stadium and then going through security to get in, and picked up his bag with the camera. Long story short, it was a cold rain for Dokken and then we went to the floor in the GA crowd for Scorpions. It started to lightning very bad and they cut Scorpions after 4 songs. We decided to leave and drive home, get dry and warm and go to the next night (as planned) at Giants Stadium in NJ. VH did play later that night in Oxford Plains and only did a 70 min set, the show is traded out on audio. Funny how the VH guys and all bands for that matter have distorted time length explanations of their shows. VH played ~100 minutes in NJ that night. Listen to Sammy say ‘we played two and a half hours at the Oxford Plains show’ And we’ll be doing that tonight. Yea right! Last I knew 70 min was just over an hour and 100 min is well shy of 2 hours. Anyway, eight more hours of driving later and a night of some sleep, I convinced Ryan he was not getting a full sized shoulder mount camcorder though security at Giants Stadium. So I lent him my older VHS-c camcorder and we both managed to get the cams into the stadium. I was caught filming Scorpions at the end of their set during the massive food fight where hot dogs, soda, fries, mustard and ketchup were flying down from the upper level on us. I kept filming standing on the chair on the first level at the 50 yard line and mustard and ketchup is landing on my camera as it was uncovered. It was also still daylight on one of the longest days of the year. Next thing I know (and it isn’t ol’ Jed’s a Millionaire), there are 3 Giants Stadium security guys standing behind me with headsets on. The lead guy tells me to put the camera away, I oblige and say thanks. The other guy says take his tape, The lead guy (very cool) says just put it away, if I see it again, I will take it away and you will be out of here. So it is put away (under the seat). Scorpions ends. I sit for a while waiting for VH to take the stage. Meanwhile I don’t know how Ryan is making out, there were no cell phones at that time folks! Then I think, I drove 8 hours for VH, I am going to try to get this show but I need to move as they are probably watching me. So it gets congested with people around me and I manage to slip away from the 50 yard line and 25 rows up on the 1st level. I decided to just get ballsy and go for it. I went 1 section out from the stage on the 1st level, 8 rows off the floor and had a golden night. The seat diagonally towards the stage in the row in front of me was never taken all night so I was able to stand in a little cubby hole protected by those standing around me and have essentially an unobstructed view to the stage from that angle. Ryan as it turned out was spotted by security at the front of the stage behind the barricade and they were aiming their flashlights at him but he just said what the heck can they do, the security was just staying there and not coming into the crazy floor GA crowd, so he just kept filming in the mass of people. Good job Ryan! After the show, we met up with this guy Grey in the parking lot who looked like Tom Sholtz of Boston. Low and behold, he filmed the show too! He showed me a minute of the show in his camera viewfinder and I distinctly remember it. Ryan really knew him but I didn’t. I just knew of him from Ryan and that he filmed a lot of shows in the NY/NJ area but didn’t let anything out. I handed Ryan off to Grey and the next day Grey took Ryan to the airport to fly home. Two months or so later, Ryan tells me Grey’s parents moved to California (he lived with his parents) and we never heard from Grey again. Our Monsters experience was done. Fast Forward 25 years later! A friend tells me that master tapes of Scorpions and Van Halen shows from Giant’s Stadium are being sold on eBay. I check it out and I remember that view of the VH show from looking through Grey’s viewfinder that night. Scans of the paper inserts of the master 8mm tapes are also on Ebay. My name mis-spelled and Ryan’s name and the NYBGs name are all on these inserts along with brief explanations of the shows. These were definitely his master tapes. But I was like, why? and it wasn’t Grey selling them. He NEVER let anything out. I only knew of a couple shows he did on video, the monsters of rock show, only thought it was VH, but he also did Scorpions and Metallica. I only did VH and Scorpions. Ryan only did VH. Grey also filmed a famous show at Giants Stadium right before he moved to CA. Aerosmith/Deep Purple/Guns n Roses. I didn’t do that show. The GnR is famous because it is where half of the Paradise City video was shot, the other half was black and white from Castle Donnington. Needless to say, I contacted the guy on eBay. He told me two stories how he got the tapes which I won’t go into but I don’t believe them. I was able to also buy two other shows from him, two Robert Plant shows he shot from the first night at the Meadowlands Arena and he gave a camera to his friend to film the second angle. I also did that night, so there is a plan to mix that as well. It says in the paper insert that he has never given any of his video out but he is going to give one song of Stevie Ray Vaughn that he filmed to his friend since he filmed the second angle of Plant for him and that it will be the first time he has ever given out anything he shot. SRV warmed up Plant on that tour. Back to the Giant’s show, which was also the first night that the NYBG filmed Metallica with permission on the SDBD using Lars’ camera. After this show, I got permission to film Metallica from NYBG with him because of this night. So this is a special night for me. And we had no idea of the technology we had in 1988 that in 2014 the technology would allow us to mix the angles together and make a 3 cam mix from 1988. As for Grey, I have no way to contact him. I tried looking online but just can’t find him. So I will say this…although I spent $100 a tape to buy the VH and Scorpions and two R Plant master tapes, I will return the tapes to you for free because (from what I expect), if master tapes were taken from me, I would hope that they would be returned to me. So contact me if you are out there and I will get the master tapes back to you. And I bought these because I thought all of you would love to see a multicam mix of these shows as much as me, considering no private 1988 mutlicam mix of arena bands has been released to date. Anyway, Enjoy! CBG5150 Posted 2014-02-28 |
