Restored, Edited & Mastered by Prof. Stoned ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Prof Stoned says: Here's part two (out of five) of my current WHO project. I attempt to restore the complete lot of the many SDB tapes from the North American fall tour of 1969 that are floating around. The problem with all these recordings is that they are not properly labelled, and in some cases it is impossible to say from which date the recording originates. (see the info.txt file from volume 1 for more on this subject) The recordings here are sourced from one bootleg: Pure Rock Theatre. Many of you already got this. But there's a world of difference in what you'll hear on those CD's compared to what's on this new version. The sound quality on this bootleg is quite clean on most of the tracks, which implies that they come from low generation tape sources, though it's has some Noise reduction. And, there are also tape warbles hearable in Tr. 01, 09 & 10. Unfortunately, no better source than this has surfaced yet. *** About The Restoration The first 5 tracks are 100 % certainly the above place +date. The last five tracks are likely to be from the same day, but I can't guarentee this for sure. It is certain though that these are not from the October 18th Stonybrook University show or any of the shows that will be covered in this series. After compared the music with a generated 660 HZ tone I corrected the speed with -0.18 semitones. Channels were already in the right order. *** About The Mastering I attempted to get a 'natural' sounding remaster. Not the kind that makes your ears bleed, nor that kind that sounds heavily processed. I never use Noise Reduction. Hate it. But unfortunately some severe NR was used in the original mastering of "Pure Rock Theatre". So if you hear it, that's where it comes from... I did some careful EQ-ing with the Pultec & the Precision. I gave the whole thing a careful treatment with 5-band multiband compression. Because of the rough nature of the mixes, this gave the mix more depth and less ear-clattering hi mids & ends. I used two different mastering settings for the whole compilation, to make the overall sound as good and similair as possible. Then I used the Precision Limiter for some more volume, but -again- very carefully. A frequency analyses proved this to be lossless. |
