NoteNow here's a story.....

I have two copies of this same recording of this particular gig. They were sent to me from different sources.

The first version (basically tracks 1 to 11 being seeded here) was sent to me by MP and is an exceptionally good quality audience recording of a REALLY good gig. I'll post a sample. It's labelled on my cassette as being a recording of a January 1983 Nijmegen gig - at the Doornroosje..... Unfortunately it lacks the intro. to, and first few seconds of, "Hearsay Please". Apart from that it's an excellent recording and seems to be the standard Cocteaus set from early 1983. However Liz makes an 'oink, oink' comment before 'Peppermint Pig' and there's some channel drop out in the interval before 'Garlands'. Both of these sounded familiar - so I dug a little deeper and found another copy in my collection.....

The other copy (from RC) is much poorer quality and runs a little slow. On the plus side however, it has the full start to 'Hearsay Please' AND an extra encore of 'Wax and Wane' after 'Ark Lark'. Unfortunately the cassette is labelled as being from Hamburg on either 26 (or 27) May 1983.....

So when did this gig take place? From the setlist it's clearly from the first half of 83. Listening to it, it's clear that the gig took place in a small venue - so it's unlikely have been April/ May when the supported OMD in large venues. Also, they get to rewind the reel to reel and play an encore - something they probably wouldn't have been allowed to do if supporting OMD. On that basis, I'm ruling out Hamburg as the source. Focusing on smaller/ earlier gigs and from listening to my other tapes I've also ruled out:

9 January (Leeds Warehouse)
29 January (Amsterdam Meervant)
30 January (Rotterdam Arena) - Thanks to Dimitroy for clarifying this one!
25 February (London Imperial College)

On that basis I'm sticking to Nijmegen 26 January 1983.

So where did the gig take place? Problem: most, if not all, Cocteau Twins gigographies (are they from the same source?) list the January 83 Nijmegen gig as being at the Vereeniging. Current Dime seed 221031 is of a Dutch Cocteaus gig of November 83 and, confusingly, lists the venue as both 'Doornroosje' AND 'De Vereniging'. Maybe it's just MP's tape labelling that's wrong here? Maybe the Doornroosje and the Vereenging are the same place? Unfortunately someone in comments for the November 83 Dime seed states that they are indeed two different venues. Okay, so regardless of the venue confusion, this is the same old 26 January 1983 Nijmegen recording we've already got, right?

More problems! Putting aside the fact that the setlist for 26 January 83 shown on the Cocteaus Forum gives the setlist from November 83, a while back someone from the Forum kindly sent me an mp3 copy of 'Peppermint Pig' from what is generally held to be the 'proper' Nijmegen Vereeniging recording that is doing the rounds. Problem is that it's not the same gig as i'm seeding here (most obviously, Liz's intro comments to 'Peppermint Pig' are different).

ON THAT BASIS I'M SEEDING THIS AS DOORNROOSJE, NIJMEGEN, 26 JANUARY 1983.

In the meantime, this is what you want to know: if you are a scum-sucking Leech and just want the decent quality recording - burn tracks 1 to 11. If you actually care about what was going on back then, want to hear the whole of the proceedings and don't mind two different tape sources, burn 12, followed by 2 to 10, then 14, then 15.....

I'm very happy to update the description, so if anyone can pin down the gig where Liz introduces Peppermint Pig by saying "This is a song about pigs. Oink, oink", let me know!

Enjoy
Josef
