Comment | ABOUT Terrapin Crossroads: As one would expect from any concert venue built by a member of the Grateful Dead, the Grate Room at Terrapin Crossroads will feature state-of-the-art sound, provided by none other than Meyer Sound. This new sound system will be installed and ready to go, along with a cosmetic facelift, in time for the first performances, scheduled for March 2012. The Grate Room will present live music of all types, from Phil Lesh & Friends shows with world-class guest artists to “Rambles†(modeled on Levon Helm’s legendary Midnight Rambles) with the Lesh Family Ramble Band, and “Terrapin All-Stars†featuring a rotating cast of fantastic local talent. We will host Big-Band dance nights, Jazz with wine tasting (hey, we are just south of Sonoma and Napa…), Latin or Salsa nights, “Telstar†free form jam nights, Sunday morning brunch featuring sacred music from around the world, and much more. In the grand tradition of the Bay Area’s best ballrooms, the Grate Room will add a spectacular dimension to the Bay Area’s live music scene. Be sure to check the TC calendar often, as we plan to announce shows frequently with a very busy schedule throughout the Spring and Summer of 2012. In the Fall of 2012, we’ll be closing down the Grate Room for a major renovation, with a grand re-opening targeted for March, 2013, when we’ll be ready to provide San Rafael with top quality music for years to come. History: The Grateful Dead are known primarily as a San Francisco band, owing to their very short, but very important time living in the city, and being the true embodiment and co-creators of “the San Francisco Sound.†But by 1970, the band had moved over the Golden Gate Bridge to Marin County, as had their administrative arm, with San Rafael acting as the hub of all Grateful Dead activity from 1970 to 1995. So to be accurate, the Grateful Dead were a San Rafael band. San Rafael is literally dotted with important Grateful Dead historical places. In 1970, the band’s management and administrative team moved into a house at 5th and Lincoln, where they would remain until 1995, the year the Grateful Dead stopped touring, and beyond, with a Grateful Dead and Ice Nine (the band’s song publishing company) presence remaining for another few years. Later in the 1970s, just around the corner on 2nd Street was the house of the New Riders of the Purple Sage’s management team. And, just up the street from the 5th and Lincoln house was the Grateful Dead’s long-time, and unique in the rock world, Grateful Dead Ticket Sales office. Take a look at the band’s Hell In A Bucket video from 1987: yup, that’s San Rafael’s main drag, 4th Street, that Bob and the Rhythm Devils are cruising down, just steps from the band’s office. While you’re poking around this area of San Rafael, known as the Canal District owing to water that flows through the neighborhood on its way to San Francisco Bay, be sure to check out 20 Front Street, site of the band’s long time (1975-1994) recording studio, tape vault, equipment storage facility, and all- around boys’ clubhouse. This is Club Front, where Shakedown Street, Go To Heaven, Dead Set, Reckoning, In The Dark, Built To Last, Without A Net, One and Two from the Vault, and Dick’s Picks 1 were produced, not to mention loads of solo projects. San Rafael is tightly tied to the history of the Grateful Dead. Not only were virtually all of the commercial and philanthropic activities of the band tied to San Rafael, several of the band members lived in San Rafael at one time or another, and were active members of the community. With Terrapin Crossroads bringing Phil Lesh back into the forefront of the San Rafael entertainment (and dining!) community, there is a feeling of coming full circle, while this new journey is just beginning on what we expect will be a long, fun trip. We’re in this for the long haul, so buckle up and come check out why San Rafael was so appealing to the Grateful Dead and why it continues to hold great appeal for Phil. Terrapin Crossroads Opening News: We will have a soft opening of the Terrapin Crossroads bar and downstairs family room on Thursday, March 8th. We’ll be serving a lounge menu and creative drinks, to give you a taste of what’s to come when we officially open the restaurant in a few months. And best of all, you can expect Phil to be dropping by often to play in the lounge with Grahame along with some friends including Tim, John and Andy from Railroad Earth who will join Phil in the lounge on March 11th.
