| Comment | Circulates misdated as 1980-02-28. Since a recording of this performance surfaced on July 9, 2010, a few facts have come to light about its date. First, the Ritz on 11th. Street opened on May 1, 1980 and was before that the Webster Hall. Second, according to Carter Van Pelt in The Beat, Vol 14 no.2 1995, Steel Pulse first came to the USA in Fall of 1980 for a limited set of engagements (full official tours began in '81). Third, The Village Voice clearly lists Feb. 28, 1981 as a show date for the Band (they played the Ritz in May as well that year). So, though I don't doubt that Habte Selassie remembered the date as 2-28-80, he also said: "I think" a few times before that reference to "2-28-1980" prior to Nyahbinghi Voyage; and so I would have to submitt that a 2-28-1981 date would seem likely more correct. |
