Sam's Enchanted Evening The Marsh Berkeley, Theater Stage Berkeley, CA October 20, 2011 9pm Audience recording: Zoom H1 > Sound Studio (cut tracks, adjust levels, reduce applause, normalize, dither, convert to 16bit) > xACT (FLAC level 8) Although the Residents are considered a performance group, this was really more of a musical play than a concert. Much of what went on had to be seen, but there is still lots of music here with Joshua Brody's piano accompaniment and the Resident's Randy Rose's version of popular songs of the past several decades. Since the monologue overlapped with the songs in most cases, I tracked best I could, trying to start new tracks where Randy starts singing a new song. 101 intro 102 Sam's Enchanted Evening 103 Teddy Bear's Picnic 104 September Song 105 Sixteen Tons 106 September Song (reprise) 107 Ode To Billie Joe 108 Ring Of Fire 109 True Love Never Runs Smooth 110 I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry 111 Willow Weep For Me 112 La Vida Loca 201 Who Do You Love 202 Moon River 203 Walk On By 204 Tracks Of My Tears 205 Born To Be Wild 206 Chinatown My Chinatown 207 Mac The Knife 208 Paint It Black 209 Windmills Of My Mind 210 Happy Trails 211 applause • RANDY ROSE (performer) prefers to tell this story about himself and Sam, his best friend in high school, in place of a personal bio: Back in the 60's, Randy had pimples, obsessively read science fiction and defined the idea of "socially challenged" while Sam was tall, handsome, rich and the life of the party. On the surface, the two had little in common, but somehow they clicked—listening to Bo Diddley and bass fishing on summer afternoons. On the rare occasions that Randy dated, the two friends went out together in Sam's Pontiac GTO. Over the years, they became estranged until one night, approaching middle age, they ran into each other in a bar and filled the air with the events and feelings of a two-decade separation but, ultimately, Sam's story left Randy stunned and speechless and haunts him to this day. Randy’s performance is dedicated to the memory of Sam. • JOSHUA RAOUL BRODY (piano, music direction) "Written and performed by The Residents 110 minutes, one intermission All seating for this performance is first-come, first-served. This show is recommended for 16 & up. Advisory: strong language & disturbing imagery. Please do not bring infants to the show. The Marsh Berkeley Theater Stage" "Laboring behind a walker, an older man painstakingly moves out onto center stage. With self-effacing humor and a tone alternating between bitter and apologetic, Sam The Stranger reveals the raw residue of lost love, lost privilege and lost opportunity... The impossible-to-pin-down Residents present yet another facet to their long career as innovators in pop music, performance art, video, and new media: a stage play. Originally conceived for 40-piece orchestra, this workshop production features the Residents' singer Randy, accompanied by long-time Marsh stalwart Joshua Raoul Brody, relating in story and song the life of Randy's childhood friend, Sam. This will be a rare opportunity to see a Residents production up-close, intimate, and stripped to the barest of production elements -- the first all-acoustic Residents show! But nothing in a Residents show is simple, or simply described, or even the same when you're reading this as it was when it was written…" This performance runs at The Marsh through November 26th.
