Melkweg Amsterdam, Netherlands October 16, 1981 Jerry Garcia - Lead Guitar, Vocals Mickey Hart - Drums Bill Kreutzmann - Drums Phil Lesh - Electric Bass, Vocals Brent Mydland - Keyboards, Vocals Bob Weir - Rhythm Guitar, Vocals *Matrix* Here is a very unique show from October 16, 1981 at the Melkweg (Milky Way) in Amsterdam. The show features a slew of rare tunes, debuts and breakouts - and it's Bobby's birthday, no less. This particular Europe '81 outing, including the previous night at the Melkweg, was played in stead of two canceled shows in France, earning them the "OOPS concerts" status. 10/16 features a very fine acoustic set reminiscent of the famous Warfield and Radio City runs in October of 1980 (check out HT Vols. 17 & 57). Rare tunes include a melancholy Ain't No Lie, a revived, raunchy version of Lovelight with Bob on vocals, echoing the Fillmore days with Pigpen, as well as the garage-band classics Hully Gully and Gloria - plenty of treats indeed for those who were lucky enough to catch the show. Given the smaller size of the venue for this period in the band's history, the matrix presents a much more intimate sound. This is about as close as one gets to hearing the Grateful Dead as a bar band in the 80's, and they magically fit the bill. Adding to the peculiarity of this show, all the band members, except for Phil, were playing on borrowed instruments, but one can hardly notice a difference in their Dead-brand sound. A short but very sweet gig, the Dead had made an indelible mark on the Milky Way for the ages. ----------------------------------------------------------------- SBD (shnid=110351): Recording Info: SBD -> Cassette Master (Sony TC-D5M/TDK SA-C90) Transfer Info: Cassette Master (Nakamichi DR-1) -> Sound Devices 744T (24bit/96k) -> Adobe Audition v3.0 -> Samplitude Professional v11.1 -> FLAC/16 (2 Discs Audio / 2 Discs FLAC) All Transfers and Mastering By Charlie Miller charliemiller87@earthlink.net October 16, 2010 [Cuts:] d2t01 - Tuning (complete track) d2t02 - Playing In The Band (0:00 - 1:46) Notes: -- Set 1 is acoustic -- Thanks to Joe B.
