OK this is one of those rare moments when it feels like I'm releasing a caged bird back into the wild!! Back in 1979 I was a huge fan of both Jethro Tull (saw them live 16 times starting with 'Passion Play' at Wembley in '73) and Yes (only saw them live 5 or 6 times - starting with 'Topographic Oceans' at the Rainbow in '73). I've since moved on musically to even better things (whilst neither of them have, in my opinion - sorry!) so I'd completely forgotten about this recording! I do now recall some of my feelings of excitement that the Scottish Ballet were coming to my local town to perform three pieces under the title of "Underground Rumours", one of which had a specially commissioned score written by David Palmer, Ian Anderson and Martin Barre from Tull called "The Water's Edge", and another was written by Jon Anderson called "Ursprung". Well I just had to go to both nights didn't I?! Night one (30th May) was to listen and watch, whilst night two was my chance to make a recording (the two don't go well together in my experience hence I didn't and still don't do much of the latter when I go to gigs!) I've done some 'googling' and it would seem that this may well be the only recording in existence of 'Ursprung' so I suspect that the lack of high fidelity will be forgiven! I recorded it using a personal cassette recorder (probably a Sony or a Panasonic - mono in those days of course) and I probably used a tie-pin external mic judging by the lack of motor noise. There's little extraneous noise thankfully, because ballet audiences don't make all the racket that some jazz and rock fans tend to do at gigs (e.g. I was getting very annoyed at some irritating people talking instead of listening to Allan Holdsworth at his superb gig at Ronnie Scott's in London last night!) So...details of the performance are: 31st May 1979 at The Pavilion Theatre, Bournemouth, UK. Performed by the Orchestra of the Scottish Ballet Company. Tracklist: 01 Preparation 7:28 02 The Source 3:01 03 Consummation 6:29 04 Ritual 8:23 Total time: 25:21 (no it's not the same 'Ritual' as on TFTO) Lineage: Recorded: Audience with unknown recorder > Playback: Nakamichi DR-2 > Wav (Goldwave) > Flac (Easy CD-DA) |
