Ever listen to a Yes album and wonder what it would be like to have Jon Anderson sing a few songs in your living room? Perhaps get him to share a few tales from the road?

Wonder no more.

The Yes vocalist spent the week of May 18-25, 2010 in Cleveland, Ohio to once again rehearse and perform with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra (the first Jon-CYO pairing was May 24, 2004). Jon and CYO played to a sold-out Severance Hall audience on May 24, 2010, premiering some new Jon material (including a four-part suite) amidst offerings of symphonic Yes masterworks.

But prior to that engagement, on May 21, 2010 (a Friday afternoon), Jon stopped by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum to participate in a “Legends Series” chat with Director of Education Jason Hanley. What this taper and longtime Yes fan expected to be a brief half-hour session became a ninety-minute intimate portrait with Jon, who shared many anecdotes about his career and music.

Oh, yeah—-he also sang a couple tunes, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar. Anyone concerned about Jon’s health (he only recently overcame an acute respiratory infection) can stop worrying. He can’t hit the high notes like he used to (even Jon himself jests he was “on helium” in the old days), but that golden voice is still vibrant and moving as ever.

The event was free but not widely publicized. Jon made no mention of it while guesting on Dee Perry’s “Around Noon” radio show 90.3 WCPN the day prior. I suspect only those subscribed to the Rock Hall Department of Education news service and a few others received any notification. When I arrived at the Rock Hall that day to wait for the Foster Theater to open I thought it strange watching the hundreds of visitors touring the museum exhibits right then-—apparently oblivious that a classic rock celebrity was on site, still making music history in his own unique and magical way. To those who attended, the "secrecy" of the talk made it all the more special.

Audio stream of Jon’s appearance on “Around Noon” with Dee Perry is available online here http://www.wcpn.org/WCPN/an/30791

The recording in this torrent was conducted stealth, as no photography or audio / video was permitted during the event. That said, several in attendance did snap a couple photos with cell phones and PDAs. I included one of my shots.

It was exhilarating to spend time up-close with the voice (and spiritual center) of Yes. Sadly, Jon and wife Jane did not hang out afterwards to meet-and-greet (previous “Legends” guest artists at the Rock Hall—including Ronnie Spector—-have indulged fans with signings, etc.). Jon, who acknowledged distaste for the “celebrity” of rock and roll during his talk, must have been saving his energy for the CYO event—-which will be shared here later.

Highlights of this one-off include Jon’s thoughts on the current touring Yes lineup and the “distance” between himself and his former band mates, and Jon taking a call on his cell in the middle of the interview (“I’ll have to call you back”).
