Kansas : The Lostbrook Tape Series - Volume 2 April 3, 1977 Palladium New York, NY USA I sometimes forget why I was a Kansas fan, especially after the radio force-fed everyone the same two or three songs. This tape transports me back to the decaying beauty of the Palladium (formerly the Academy of Music) and reminds me how Kansas truly combined “progressive†with “rock.†I found a stub for a souvenir, but I never had a ticket for this concert. Paul and I arrived early to buy tickets on the street, but it was unnecessary. We walked over to the stage door and saw a security guard managing the guest list. Paul casually looked over the guard’s shoulder and grabbed a name off the list, a perfect name that I will never forget – Ray Free, party of 4. We got on line and Paul said he was Ray Free, I was his guest, and the other two would be along shortly! Before we knew it, we were walking up a dark staircase that led to Kansas’ dressing room. There was a party going on, but we kept a low profile and sat in a corner. I imagine I still had the tape deck down my pants! As show time approached, we decided to find seats and set up the recorder. We went down another staircase and found ourselves standing on the stage in front of a packed house. We got more than a few strange looks from the audience and the roadies, so we hopped off the stage and headed to the rear of the orchestra, hoping to find empty seats along the way. There were none, so we stood behind the last row, near the soundboard. I set up the recorder on a half-wall that separated us from Row Z, and shielded it from view with my body. The sound in this location, not surprisingly, was excellent. This was not the case near the stage where I often sat, and this is one of my best Palladium tapes. Ray Free, if you’re out there, we owe you one. I hope you still got to see the show. It was awesome!
