J-Card CommentMillard Notes: It was 25 years ago the last time I listened to this concert and I completely forgot how good it was. Just the names on the title alone made it special, but I was in for a much bigger surprise. I had always remembered the concert as Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, and Lenny White with Al Jarreau. But when I started mastering this recording, I realized it wasn't Lenny White, but was Tony Williams. Realizing that this recording has the late Tony Williams is what my son would call an "HCU" (Huge Come-Up) and makes it even more rare and more special than I had remembered. The second HCU was the concert itself. After listening to it 25 years later, I had forgotten how incredibly great this concert is. Where else would you ever hear Al Jarreau performing a non-Vocalese version of Spain two years before he recorded it himself and made it a huge hit. This recording comes from the tape collection of Mike Millard (see Wiki page). I met Mike in line at a Stevie Wonder concert at Pasadena Civic Auditorium in 1979. Mike and I became friends and we traded some tapes together. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Millard Mike had a few Jazz recordings and was an avid Stevie Wonder fan though he didn't want people to know it. Since Mike was best known for his legendary Led Zepelin, Pink Floyd, and Rolling Stones recordings, he feared knowledge of his Jazz recordings would hurt his reputation. As far as I know, only myself and maybe one other friend of mine were ever allowed to make copies of his Jazz recordings. This all but guarantees this recording has never been traded before, or circulated on any of these types of recording sites. It's been 20+ years since Mike's passing and I've received many persistent requests to work this concert up, master it, and release it. This is an amazing concert with great 'Mike Millard" sound quality. Please enjoy. Mike Millard, 1990, RIP ----- Flaws: There's a bit of excessive wow and flutter in the opening two minutes of the show. It seems to clear up after the first few minutes and the remainder of the show is fine. There are also a few more drop outs on this late show when compared to the early show.
