J-Card Comment | Joe Ely has been one of my favorite live acts since I saw him at the Palomino in 1978. Although Lloyd Maines had left the touring band by 1981 Jessie still played lead guitar and Ponty was on the squeeze box. This was a time of change for Joe and this was the last time I saw Ponty with the band. The addition of piano and horns really turns up the heat on this rockin-out Joe Ely sound. By the second set Joe and band were setting the house on fire. Mario was a neighbor and customer of the record store were I worked (Slipped Disc Records). I needed someone to help out on the recording and told him his ticket was free if he didn't like the band. In the end I dragged at least 4 or 5 more unsuspecting customers to this show. We sat on the right side at a table about 15 feet from the stage. The microphones had a straight shot at the stage and overhead speakers. I think everyone in our group was sold on "Joe" by the end of the first song. Jessie's guitar and Joe's shouting has that effect on drinkin' folk. By the way, Mario enjoyed this show so much he bought round after round of beers. He is such a great guy we have been best friends ever since. A magic performance and an excellent quality audience recording come together again. The technical issues, The tape volume was very low at the start of the first set. The volume was adjusted during the end to end review but this brought up a bit of hiss for a few seconds. Turned out that one of the microphones had an intermittent battery connection. It showed up a couple times at the start of the first set and then worked perfect for the rest of the night. Two songs have short segments of mono where that microphone cut out. No equalization or additional noise reduction of the tape. Thanks to John Musgrave for letting us borrow his equipment to record this concert and many others.
