J-Card Comment | Late Show Joe Ely - Vocals and Guitar Lloyd Maines - Pedal Steel Jesse Taylor - Guitar Ponty Bone - Accordion Photos by Dave Pickett (courtesy of the Allen Tarzwell collection) Memories: My first taste of what turned out to be a lifelong favorite artist. My friend Allen asked me if I could tape this concert for his wife Cathy. It was her birthday and her "party" was at this show. I was across town at the Santa Monica Civic helping to record Weather Report with my friends John, Sue and the B-Man. As soon as that was over I grabbed John's gear and took off for the San Fernando Valley. There was a seat waiting for me when I arrived and I set up in the open thinking the early show was a radio broadcast so who would care? There was a guy at the bar who was eyeing me and after a couple songs walked over and asked me to stop taping. He introduced himself as Joe's manager and explained that there were songs being performed in this set that had not been released. I was very polite and avoiding trouble complied immediately. Turned the deck off and coiled the microphones upon my jacket which I had placed on the table (pointing them towards the stage). After some complaining by our table he turned around and went back to the bar. As he turned around I hit the record button again. I remember when it was time to flip the tape our whole group stood up and blocked the view from the bar. We had a table with approximately 20 people and I was sitting stage left and about 10-15 feet from the stage and a couple feet from the wall. I couldn't stand country music at that time (woke up later) so I was not expecting to enjoy this. It was "love" at first note. This is one of my favorite audience recording out of all the shows I've ever taped. Very dynamic and clear as a bell. After the show we went out to Allen's van and hung around re-playing the entire concert while gray clouds formed above the van. At one point Ponty Bone came by and stopped in for a listen. He picked up that this was not the early show right away. We explained the situation about the manager and Ponty sort of chuckled and told us not to worry. I made a few tape copies of this recording for friends over the years. Even gave Joe this recording at the next concert he played in Los Angeles (the Palomino again). So it is time to share this jewel with all of you Joe Ely fans out there. TURN IT UP AND ENJOY SOME VINTAGE JOE ELY BAND! If anyone has the radio broadcast from the early show please share. |
