FOOD is the duo of saxophonist Iain Ballamy and percussionist Thomas Strønen. Formerly a quartet, featuring Mats Eilertsein and Arve Henriksen, their work now highlights the delicate balance between Ballamy’s lyrical sense of melody and Strønen’s weave of intricate rhythmic and electronic soundscapes. FOOD foster a unique environment for true improvisation and regularly invite like-minded artists to join this dynamic musical dialogue. In this performance they are joined by genre-defying guitarist and band leader Eivind Aarset - collaborator with the likes of Nils Petter Molvaer, Jan Bang and recently Andy Sheppard. The opening set for this double bill comes from Norwegian guitar prodigy Stian Westerhus, recipient of the prestigious JazZtipend award. Expect raw expression, a technique that stretches the boundaries of the instrument and a stunning melodic instinct. “Welcome to the new century of improvised music.†|
