This is LT's complete NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DIARY Disc 4

The evening Memphis show has gone down in history as the infamous "firecracker incident" as during "If I Needed
Someone" some kids in the audience threw a lit cherry bomb near the stage which exploded. Legend has it that The
Beatles all thought one of them had been shot and stopped playing, but total pro's that they were (and no doubt
this was partially learned by their time in Hamburg enduring audience fights), The Beatles carried on as if
nothing had happened (the audience certainly reacts, however).

John Lennon later stated that it was this incident which sealed his decision that he no longer wanted to tour.

Despite this, however, the general consensus of opinion is that The Beatles played well during their 1966 American
tour, giving much better performances than they had previously in the year in Germany and the Far East. These
recordings are both good for the time, and the afternoon show features a particularly hysterical audience.

The full story on these audience tapes can be found here:

"The (woman who offered these recordings for sale) and her best friend took their portable reel-to-reel tape
recorders to both the afternoon and evening concerts that day in Memphis. At the evening concert, during If I
Needed Someone, the explosion went off. (She) recalls that they thought someone was shooting at the Beatles. After
the concert, it was established that kids had thrown cherry bomb fireworks near the stage. The Beatles later said
they thought it was a gunshot."
