Note | The better recording is incomplete and does not circulate except on vinyl, so it is transferred from an old bootleg LP on the Rubber Dubber label called "Goin' Back to the Roots." I rate it as VG+ for side 1 and VG for side 2. The vinyl is not as well pressed on side 2, or possibly the taper changed location. The original LP fades out between some but not all songs. In May 2007, for the transfer I used a Music Hall MMF-7 turntable with an Ortofon OM20 cartridge, an Adcom GFP-565 preamp, and an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 sound card. I carefully reduced LP clicks, adjusted levels, and faded in and out using Cool Edit Pro 2.1. I did not use any noise reduction or EQ. In September 2010, I matched the recording speed to the DAC CD, which meant speeding it up 1.5-2.0% using Adobe Audition 1.5.
The lesser recording is used to fill the gaps and is a modified version of DAC's "Goin' Back to the Roots" as uploaded to Dime by Erik Snow in July 2010 (thanks Erik). I boosted the volume as much as possible in an attempt to match the better recording, which is generally louder, but did nothing else. The exact same recording was previously released by VGP on their "Goin' Back to the Roots" CD, but DAC did a better EQ job this time around. The recording is just average for '72. All transitions between the sources were crossfaded in Adobe Audition. Tracks were split using CD Wave and tagged with foobar2000. Presented in FLAC 1.2.1. Scan of LP front cover is included. Includes cue sheet with CD text. First uploaded on Dime by watchit, Oct. 2010. |
