"Groove Collective's identity lies not in one fixed style but in its capable hospitality to whatever might keep hips swaying." Acid Jazz? Afro-Cuban funk? Trip-hop? Sharp and danceable? If you need a soundtrack to New York City in the 1990s, Groove Collective would be it, at least if you were out at night on the Lower East Side and Williamsburg just as those neighborhoods were starting to transform (and today's hipsters were still in diapers). Nappy G was a friend's frat brother (shhh) and we were turned on . . . . Yes, that's the Bill Ware from Steely Dan. You can tune in, or go to background, but it's the kind of music that keeps grabbing your attention because it really is that good. It's too bad they didn't have more commercial success. Or maybe not. Give a listen, and decide. Thanks to Mr. Zeau for the DAT, and Genji Siraisi for help with the setlist. Groove Collective still plays, and has albums in the stores. If you like what you hear, please do the right thing . . . . Enjoy! --mhg :: 03/23/2010 |
