comments:
There were 2 additional songs in this concert, Birds of Fire and Miles
Beyond, which were accidentally erased (apparently) from my copy years ago
when I was much less organized about labeling part 2's of tapes, and I lost
contact with the source of this many years ago. Not sure exactly where in
the sequence they are as I suspect the encore was Celestial Terrestrial
Commuters (common around this time for them). I am sure this is a burnfest
of a concert, as were all 5 Boston Maha. shows I saw in 72 and 73. I did not
help in the recording of this show (no recorder) but I'm pretty sure this was
one of the 5 shows I saw with the original Maha. Orch. It opens with a killer
One Word, not just for what Billy does in it (that's always good too) but
what John and Rick do in it, and goes from one hot song to another. Even the
acoustic and rarely played live Lotus on Irish Streams is well played here.
This is one of the 5 best concerts I've ever heard, and one of my most often
played live recordings (of anybody). There are cuts between songs as the taper
was shutting off the deck in between but they are all complete or very close to
it. (much like the Grateful Dead, Maha. was sometimes famous for long tuneup
breaks) If anyone has this whole great show please do us all a big favor and
post it. The whole thing runs close to 120 min. but this recording only has
about 3/4 of the show. Spring and fall are Mahavishnu season, one reason why I'm
posting 2 of the best examples I have to show why I feel that way. The other one
is a first time from master seed, which is better show? Well, do you prefer your
Maha. with roast birds or lava-hot trilogy? That's about what it comes down to.
So download both of them and tell me which is the hotter show. (the other one will
be coming soon) If you got another MO that's just as hot, let's hear it. Maybe when
I've heard every show they ever played, I'll have "enough" (original) Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Not before. They are that good, and that different, every time. Does One Word ever
sound the same twice? Never. All their songs sound very different every show, and
few any better than in this one. It's a very hot show! Not bad sound either for a
73 Maha. audience tape. It is physically impossible for me to ever get sick of
hearing this band in concert. If you haven't heard this show, and love the original
Maha. Orch. this is essential listening! Jerry doesn't come through very well in the
mix, maybe he just didn't play alot in this show but Jan, John, Rick and Billy can
all be heard very clearly in most of this recording, and they play plenty you want
to hear. I think this is one of the 2 Maha. shows I saw when Loggins and Messina opened.
An odd mix they were, opening for these guys, but their sets were good both times with
a long, jammed out "vahevela". Woulda liked to hear John add his two cents to that.
Some people go to church/temple/mosque to pray, but I pray to the god of Maha.
Maybe it was the "Spiritual Sky" incense sold at many a Maha. show, that hooked me,
but 35 years later I still can't get enough Maha. Orch. Can you?
this is, in the opinion of glasnostrd19, the greatest electric instrumental band ever
assembled. If you don't believe me, have a listen and hear for yourself. If you already
agree, have some more proof.
do not sell this recording.
