Comment | Chris Youlden (ex-Savoy Brown vocalist) & Bluesprint (including original Yardbirds guitarist Top Topham): The Ritz-Austin, TX-May 13, 1990
It was 17 years ago today that PS attended this one-off gig by Chris Youlden & Bluesprint at the decrepit and run-down Ritz Theater, venue for many punk acts appearing in Austin over the years. PS was literally one of five people who attended this concert, which was announced at the last minute in the local paper. PS recalled that he was probably the only member of the general public who attended, as the other four people appeared to be "with the band" or roadie crew. Chris Youlden shows are extremely rare and this one is a real gem. The band is in top form, having just completed recording the still-unreleased "Springtime in Texas" CD at a local studio in the Texas Hill Country. This band also includes Top Topham, the original Yardbirds guitarist prior to Eric Clapton. This show features many prime Savoy Brown numbers that Youlden wrote and sang on, as well as songs from Youlden's early solo albums, and finally, a sprinkling of new numbers from the "Springtime in Texas" sessions. Youlden possesses one of the finest voices in rock. Hope you enjoy the show. Please support Chris Youlden by purchasing his official releases, including the 2002 "Maxwell Street-Movin' Along" and 2005 "Waydown-Greek Street" CD collaborations with Shakey Vick. In addition, the Youlden/Vick band has just finished a new CD, to be released later this year. Interestingly, Youlden and Vick are performing tonight and through July at the Inn on the Green (off Portobello Road in London). Please go out and support them live if you have the chance. |
