Notemix of two recordings
J-Card CommentR.E.M. The Fabulous Fox Theater, Atlanta, GA November 24, 1987 Taper: RS gear unknown/tbc Tape 1: Glen’s tape > M Audio 192 > Audition 1.5 > wav Tape 2: Robbo’s tape > M Audio Audiophile 2496 > Audition 1.0 > wav This is the first of the four “homecoming” shows which rounded off the Work Tour. We’ve got decent tapes of two of them, this one and the 25th Nov. We’ve found parts of the 27th (but we don’t have the whole show) and a frankly rubbish recording from the 28th. I put this show together from two versions of the same recording. The first 45 mins, up to the tape flip is from a tape I received from Glen (cheers mate!). The second part, up to the end of The One I Love is from a tape conversion done by Robbo in 2004. The reason is that Robbo’s part 2 sounded better than Glen’s, even though they were clearly from the same recording. 01. Finest Worksong * 02. These Days * 03. Welcome To The Occupation * 04. Disturbance At The Heron House * 05. Pilgrimage * 06. Exhuming McCarthy * 07. Orange Crush * 08. Feeling Gravitys Pull * 09. King Of Birds * 10. Simple Gifts * 11. I Believe * 12. Maps And Legends * <tape flip> 13. Driver 8 ^ 14. Superman ^ <crowd noise patched in> 15. Auctioneer (Another Engine) ^ 16. Oddfellows Local 151 ^ 17. It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) ^ 18. Begin The Begin ^ encore 1: 19. Strange ^ 20. Fall On Me ^ 21. Wolves, Lower ^ 22. Just A Touch ^ encore 2: 23. The One I Love ^ 24. What We All Want * 25. See No Evil * Encore 3: 26. Dark Globe * cut then ^ 27. Harpers ^ cut then * 28. Pop Song 89 * 29. Crazy * * from Glen’s tape. ^ from Robbo’s tape. Notes: In the past the setlist for this show has been both wrong and incomplete. So we’ll be setting that straight today, I hope. Firstly, I can’t find any evidence that Flowers of Guatemala was played at this show, if it was played then it probably would have been during the encores. And secondly, the encores have been expanded by a couple of songs… somehow See No Evil had been cut from many tapes, as had Pop Song 89 and Crazy. Although previously circulated tapes were missing those three songs, they did include fragments of the third encore: half of Dark Globe in reasonable quality, followed by the second half of Dark Globe from another (terrible) source. And depending on which tape you received, you probably had either the start or the end of Harpers. So I’ve gathered all these bits together so you’ve got everything which I think is available from this show. Also included as a bonus files are (thanks to Tim for these): A. A rare solo interview with Bill Berry recorded for KZEW in Dallas prior to the 18 Nov 87 show at Southern Methodist University. B. A cheesy radio promo ad for the Fox Theater shows on the 24th and 25th Nov 87.
