Note | Lineage: awesome Audience recording -> "Say Yes" liberated bootleg (Red Phantom
records) -> Dimeadozen bit torrent (seeder info not available) -> TheTooleMan (Sound Forge) -> FLAC "Hildie" on Dimeadozen asked if I had this recording, so I dug it out and gave it a listen. Turns out this is an excellent and complete audience recording from the Union tour - the soundboard Westwood One Superstar Concert Series recording is incomplete. Unfortunately, the pitch of the recording on the Italian "Red Phantom" bootleg release is a full semitone sharp. Also, the CD's were tracked by someone who apparently does not know much about Yes music. TheTooleMan to the rescue! I sharpened my razor blades, cleaned off several months worth of bills from my desk, had a few stiff drinks, and went to bed. The next day I cleared out my hard drive and did battle with Windoze for several hours. Tools finally ready, I got to work on my first remaster of the new year. Thankfully, the bootleg had not been overly abused, and I was able to get excellent results fairly fast. Correcting the pitch was most of the battle, but I also split or combined a few tracks as I saw fit. (Fie on those Italian bootleggers!) A few little edits were needed to cut an ear-splitting 5500 Hz feedback in "All Good People," extend a quick fade-out at the end of a tape, and correct other minor problems. EQ was a little flat, so I improved it, too. The tape has a great high end with virtually no hiss. I did not fix a jump cut in the beginning of "Rhythm of Love." It's not too distracting, and you may not even notice it. I don't know whether it is a master tape glitch or an error introduced during the CD extraction by the original seeder. It could also have been a problem with the recording Yes used to start the song during this tour - it may have been heard by the audience during the performance at Wembley! Scans of the bootleg art are included from the previous seed, but the tracks as shown in the art don't agree with the actual track list posted below. With the pitch adjustment, forget about the track times on the art. My changes are documented in the track list below. You'll enjoy this one, especially now that it sounds more like Yes and less like castrati. TheTooleMan January 2008 |
