J-Card CommentR.E.M. 21 February 2005 Hallam FM Arena Sheffield, England Chops version Equipment Sony TCD-D7 DAT Walkman Sound Professionals SP-SPSB-1 Slimline Battery Module with adjustable Bass Roll-off (set to 195Hz) Sound Professionals SP-TFB-2L Low Sensitivity Binaural in-ear microphones Mastering I transfer the tape from the DAT to my G5 (via S/PDIF), this keeps the transfer digital. I use Logic Pro 7 to record the DAT in real time. Once in Logic the first thing to do is EQ the recording. Next it goes the through a compressor to reduce the dynamic range (the difference between the loudest peak and quietest one). The last thing I use is a limiter. This is similar to a compressor in that it will trim any peaks. It also allows you to raise the whole level of the recording to any level below 0dB without introduce clipping. This is better than normalising because if there is a peak that's nearly at the limit then it won't increase the levels of the rest of the recording. This is important to remember when at gigs because there will always be someone clapping loudly near you. This recording actually needed more post-production work doing to it because I was all set for a full on rock show not an acoustic set. Set: 01 - Michael Delivers The Bad News 02 - The One I Love 03 - Leaving New York 04 - I've Been High 05 - Losing My Religion
