Alumni Blues > Jam * Trey's dad singing and playing ukelele - possibly solo - may have been soundcheck or the very tail end of an opening set ** performed three times, first as Anarchy, second as "Nazi Trustes" and last as "Killer African Bees" Notes: If you are a fan of sound quality, you may want to pass this one over - there is a fair amount of tape hiss and it's taken from an analog of unknown generations. And it's 1986. That said if you a phan of history, you'll want to stay tuned. This has not circulated in a lossless format before, and it's the best copy I could locate. Consider it a gap filler until an upgrade surfaces. First off, it's the final circulating gig with Jeff Holdsworth, and one of very few examples of Phish as a 5 man band. Earth Day at UVM. The gig was likely performed outdoors. Trey's dad opens the show playing and singing, possibly just a soundcheck, or possibly the tail end of an opening set. There was deck pausing done between almost all of the songs - but the jams seem to be intact. I notated the tape cuts. This show was an Earth Day concert at UVM and took place outside the Bailey Howe Library on the Green. This performance previously circulated with the dates April 15 and April 29, 1986. Trey introduced the band as the “Bob Dylan Band” before they began a jam that led into a short All Blues (the first known Phish performance; it was only about a minute long). Dog Log was dedicated to all of the dogs that were running around, including Marley the Wonder Dog (Trey's dog). Possum included a Help on the Way tease.

This show was an Earth Day Concert at UVM. The setlist is exactly the same as 4/25/86 so one date (or at least one setlist) is incorrect – it’s presumed that the 4/25 date is correct and 4/15 was the result of mislabeled tapes – see 4/25/86 setlist for details. Before AC/DC Bag, Trey introduced his dad (“all the way from NJ”). This show featured the 1st known performance of All Blues (Miles Davis cover) surrounded by Trey’s banter about The Bob Dylan band. Dog Log was dedicated to all the dogs at the show including “Marley The Wonder Dog”. Anarchy was dedicated to Jim Tasse (Jones) who was leaving to play with The Joneses and Sierra at Slade Hall. Possum included a Help On The Way (Grateful Dead) tease. Anarchy was performed three times at this show – first with the usual “Anarchy” lyric, then as “Jim Tasse” and finally as “Nazi Trustees” and “Killer African Bees”. Camel Walk was introduced as a disco song (imagine the disco ball). Also, according to Garrett Mead, Paul Paul the Banjo Man played two of his tunes solo: Rutabega Boogie and Life Gets Tedious. According to a recording circulated among fans, Trey’s father, Ernie Anastasio opened for Phish on banjo or ukelele with Trey, performing 2 songs – Rutabega Boogie and Life Gets Tedious. This information does not match Garrett’s recollection of Paul Paul The Banjo Man and is considered legend until confirmed.
