J-Card CommentR.E.M. 20th Anniversary Series Volume 10 29 October 1985 Le Palais, Hammersmith, London About a year ago this new recording taken from the original master which the taper used to make the “These Days” CD appeared - it featured more tracks than originally appeared on “These Days”, the taper included two more of the other missing tracks from this show as filler on another CD he’d mailed out. Assembling the complete show from the various parts has been a labour of love for me. This is the third time I’ve re-cut this show, and now only Gravity’s pull, and some bits of between-song crowd noise were not supplied directly by the taper. This is the end of my contribution to the 20th Anniversary Series, and DL442000 will pick up the thread again with some shows from the Reconstruction III tour in November, so stand by for some more classic performances. In the meantime, put that old copy of “These Days” out of reach and enjoy the whole show. This is the last show of R.E.M.’s 1985 European tour, the tour on the whole was not a success, generally in Europe they found themselves playing to US servicemen which was more than a little frustrating. In the UK the crowd was mostly British, but many of these venues were miniscule especially compared with the likes of the Radio City Music Hall. Certainly the tour was not repeating the exponential effect on record sales that the US tours has achieved. R.E.M. left the UK in October ’85 feeling that they were wasting their time in Europe. In the US, however, the ball was well and truly rolling on towards bigger, and arguably, better things. They would not tour Europe properly again until 1989 (save for four token shows in 1987). Artwork included. Pictures of Le Palais taken in April 2004.
