J-Card Comment | R.E.M. Reconstruction tour northeast - 20th anniversary series, Volume 2.
August 17, 1985 – Barrymore’s, Ottawa
Sony TCD-6M/Nacamichi CM-300 > Audience cassette master > Cassette > Cassette > CDR > dBpowerAMP > WAV > FLAC Frontend > Flac files
This was also taped by David O. Thomas, although I did not get my copy directly from him. However, it is only one additional generation from his master. The quality is not quite as good as the Toronto show, although this one is also very clear and heavy on the low end. It is slightly more distant sounding, but it is a solid VG+/B+, possibly EX-/A-.
The show itself is extraordinary. It could easily be argued that it is the most noteworthy show the band ever played, and although it might not be the best, it is probably the most interesting. Barrymore’s is a club, and just about all of the other shows on this tour were in larger theaters, which certainly provided some inspiration on this particular night. But what sets this show apart is an incident that occurs at the beginning of the encores. During the a cappella “Moon Riverâ€, and audience member yells something inappropriate, which causes Stipe and Mills to stop the song and reprimand the heckler. They eventually resume, and much like the night before, they play an extended and spirited series of unique covers.
