Note | Lineage: ALD/SBD > D8 (listen box--from the parking lot) DAT > CDR > TheCommish,
then: CDR > EAC > Wave files > Editing (see below) > FLAC Frontend > FLAC Editing notes: * Show was recorded out-of-phase; show was phase-corrected (to be "in-phase") via Cool Edit Pro * Re-tracked certain track by combining in Nero's wave editor and re-splitting with CD Wave * Deleted extra applause in Track 206 (12 seconds at the beginning of the track and 15 seconds at the end of the track) * Using Nero's wave editor, applied small fade-ins (Track 101, 204 and 206) and small fade-outs (Track 203, 205, 206). Seemless transition between discs (no fades applied) * Deleted half-second of extraneous noise in Track 101 (at the 9:32 mark) Jim notes: * Complete performance of "Greendale" album (unreleased until Aug. 19, 2003) * 2nd show of tour Here's a "Greendale" review from The All-Music Guide (by Stephen Thomas Erlewine): "Prior to its release, 'Greendale' received more attention than any other Neil Young album in years, but it wasn't positive. Young hauled out his concept album -- about an extended family in a small town called Greendale, and how they're town apart by a murder -- to unsuspecting audiences, who by and large were not happy about spending anywhere from 55 to 85 dollars to hear a dense convoluted song cycle, complete with rambling narrative from Young, for the first hour of the show and not hearing many hits in the remainder of the set. Early in the summer of 2003, there was a brief blast of stories about this quasi-scandal, setting the stage for the late-summer release of the album: it got Young some needed press, and announced that unlike his last several albums, Young was actually trying this time around." Jim F. notes: (regarding his ALD-SBD shows): "ALDs (fm-sbd) perfect captures in most or all cases..however somewhat lacking bass..more than regular fm..The best place to rec these shows was from the park lot..! the signal was the best there..!" ALD (assisted listening device) soundboard recordings are usually knocked for their "thin" sound quality (high amount of treble, not enough bass), but I don't think that's a real issue here at all. As such, Jim's files have been unaltered for sound quality (i.e., no EQ performed)--if some of you prefer to have more bass in your ALD recordings, I'll let you do your own EQ work since it then becomes a matter of personal taste. As for me, I think the show sounds great, as-is. |
