Note | Notes on Deeside film by King Lerch:
------------------------------------ The Deeside film was filmed by Andy Banks. He filmed some Zeppelin too which was used (without credit or compensation) in the official Zeppelin DVD set. This Genesis film wasn't a great vantage point and typically the dark crowd covers the lower half of the screen. Also, it had an unfortunately (ask Chris) large number of cuts. Many clips were only a second or two. I had the film transferred (as always) frame by frame. This adjusts brightness based on each particular frame. This is important for dark concert footage since bright transfers wash out in some areas and dark transfers are, well...dark. The downside to this type of transfer is during times where only a small spotlight is on the stage. The camera iris opens to get more light and sometimes washes out the spotlit area. But the only way to get around that problem is to have different light settings for each scene. Sometimes possible, but there were just too many scenes in this one. Since this was a handheld film, I reduced some of the shakyness. I only did this a little (maybe 5-10 pixels) but it makes a surprising improvement. I also did a small amount of video noise reduction to reduce some of the film grain in the dark areas. The stage areas were virtually untouched. At this point I sent the film to Chris for audio syncing. The task of adding audio to this film was very tough due to the numerous quick clips and low number of Phil singing clips. Chris can give more info on this part of the process. After that I only buttoned it up and added titles. -kl |
