J-Card CommentCaptain Beyond Rod Evans- vocals Larry "Rhino" Reinhart- guitar Lee Dorman- bass, piano, Hammond organ, vocals comments: I recieved this on a disc with 4 tracks in it, and have tried to track it accordingly. I may have messed up a couple, but I think every track is at the beginning of a song. I don't know if this is a whole show, but it does appear to not have any interruptions of the songs here. I don't know what tracks 3 and 6 are, maybe part of something else, but they don't seem to appear on either of the 1st 2 albums, "Captain Beyond" and "sufficiently breathless". all the titled ones are on the 1st (studio) album. I don't think they did anything from the 3rd one (dawn explosion) which I'm not very familiar with, and came out in 1977. even this early on they would play "distant sun" which was on the 2nd album. They don't do anything in here from that record. The only official release so far of live Captain Beyond is from Arlington Texas 1973, and probably their most widely circulated ROIO before that. Captain Beyond is one of a very few bands I've ever heard whose 1st 3 albums are all very different in style. the 1st one, featured here, is alot of rather high energy space rock. Sufficiently is mellower (but not sleepy), if you could imagine Nik Turner's Space Ritual with some CSNY vocal in it, maybe not that good but good. Dawn Explosion is more high energy rock, not really spacey as the 1st 2 are in parts. I have asked a few times if anyone has some of this far too rarely heard band (especially from 71-73 era) since prior to getting this the only postworthy Captain Beyond I had was 5/23/77, which has been posted twice and died an early torrent death on dime tracker. thanks to luciferburns for providing this recording to share. any Captain Beyond of listenable quality is welcome in my speakers that is from 71-73 era and more than just snippets (as was "the completer", a C.B. post about a year ago from another uploader that had 4 far from complete shows together in a 2 disc torrent). Whether this is complete or not (I'm told it is, and being this a "festival" gig it could be). the quality is not great, but not bad at all for a 72 aud of an outdoor festival show. do not sell this recording. trade freely and losslessly.
