The Days Were Golden Concert review from the April 29, 1999 issue of the University of Washington's student newspaper, The Daily: ------------------------------------ Sunny Day Real Estate concert review.. Pooja Khandekar The Daily There are few male vocalists who can capture an audience's attention with the sheer power of their voice, transcending music and lyrics. One of these vocalists is Sunny Day Real Estate's Jeremy Enigk. Monday night, Sunny Day Real Estate headlined a well-attended show in the HUB ballroom. The opening acts were Stella Mars and popsters Death Cab for Cutie. During the final few minutes before Sunny Day Real Estate came onto the stage, the crowd hummed with an anxious anticipation. Finally, the band took the stage to the background of excited applause that doubled in volume with the first few notes of the opening song. The set began with an energy and intensity that would dominate the mood of the room for the rest of the night. The band members, besides Enigk (including the newly added ex-Posie Joe Skyward on bass), displayed their passion outwardly; for Enigk, the passion was given outlet through his voice. Though his lyrics were rarely clear, his channeled emotions were obvious. One could feel his anger, his hurt, his sadness, his joy. Enigk's distinctive vocals - sometimes plaintive, sometimes tortured, sometimes soothing, sometimes unnerving - empowered the set. This music was not without power of its own - the vocals were backed by dazzling riffs, intricate melodies, and over-the-top energy. Sunny Day Real Estate's "style" is difficult to pin down. What is certain is their music is held together by raw energy and shared passions that spill over from the band to the audience. It is this ability of Sunny Day Real Estate's to transmit emotions and energies to the listener that makes them such an experience to see live.
