So much so, that my buddy who had bought a ticket & was due to meet up with me there, backed out at the last minute as the snow flakes got bigger & BIGGER - A Regret of his he still carries today!!!" - Belfrank It is believed, that another recording has been also made at Wulfrun hall with a Sony Walkman and that the show was video taped as well. NOTES Jeff performed in Wolverhampton for the first time almost exactly a year ago at the Connaught Hotel on March 19, 1994 during his Live At Sin-é Solo tour in front of a couple hundred concertgoers. Now he returns with his band to a sold-out show at Wulfrun Hall, an indoor venue with a standing capacity of just over 1,100. This is the third of their five UK dates which ends the Mistery White Boy tour. The show goes on very well with a significantly good vibe despite the fact that Wolverhampton received a considerably heavy snow downfall. So heavy that and even the local news broadcast implied prior to the show that anybody venturing out that night would better stay home which Jeff made referenceds just before starting the show: "Is it the snow? Everybody's so far away..." "... Hello Wolverhampton!" The audience's reaction to Jeff's welcome tells that they came with high expectations. "I just kinda make some adjustments so get on with it." While getting ready, he introduces his band. "That in the brown shirt. Weight a hundred and twenty-nine pounds is Michael Thye! On the bass is Mick Grondhal. Back here, Matt Johnson. On drums! The real one! Who-hoo on Matt Johnson!" Then an electrifying 'Dream Brother' opens the show and blows away the audience completely just like its follow-up, 'So Real'. Tonight Jeff sings two Nina Simone tunes infront of the stunned crowd causing much amazement. 'That's All I Ask' is sung by all himself for almost three minutes without any accompanying instrument and this resulted some remarkable vocal journeys throughout the performance. It showcases his unpaired talent which comes through both in his voice and the way he's able to use and excavate it to sing out a certain part. 'Hallelujah' is received with great admiration yet as Jeff starts to play its melody on guitar. After the performance Jeff suddenly adds "All right, we love you!" Then someone shots for some Neil Young to which Jeff begins to sing the first lines of 'Helpless': "There is a town in North Ontario, I don't use cocaine, but I like the smell of it..." causing laughter in the audience. The show set all highs and the rocking songs, such as 'Eternal Life' and 'Kick Out The Jams' are also playing a decent part making a festivity out of a cold and sober night."Oh baby" To Jeff's countdown, "One, two, three, hit me!", Matt begins to play 'Vancouver' to which he remarks in a little girl's voice that "This is a song from my new album!" His guitar solo is cultivated with appearent improvisations not similar to other performances. - Buda --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JEFF BUCKLEY May 5th (Friday), 1995 University of California at Berkeley, Sproul Plaza Berkeley, California 01 Last Goodbye 5:17 02 Jeff Chatter 1:30 03 Lover, You Should Have Come Over 7:48 04 So Real 4:38 05 Stone Temple Pilots spoof 1:49 06 Mojo Pin 6:27 07 Jeff Chatter / Band Intros 3:50 08 Grace 7:18 Total running time: 38:44 SOURCE DAT audience recording Two Sony ECM-77b mics >Sony TCD-D7 @32kHz "A very very good audience recording probably made by one of the students. He's audible between the first two songs talking about himself being in illegality now. The wind blows into the mic a few times during the opening 'Last Goodbye' and the closing 'Grace' but it just can't ruin the overall listening experience." - Buda Lineage: -DAT master cloned @32kHz > CoreSound 7-pin >M-Audio Audiophile 2496 >raw FLAC freeze -Wavelab 5.0 >CDWave >FLAC Frontend (level 8, aligned on sector boundaries) Technical Notes: -Resampled to 44.1 kHz at 32-bit float with Wavelab -Levels adjusted during first song as taper adjusts attenuator -Clipping present on master attenuated -Some frequency loss from 32 kHz source restored; otherwise unadorned "Received as straight transfer at 32 kHz from New Homebrew. The set originally included a 7-plus minute portion at the start, consisting of mostly Jeff strumming his guitar as he prepared to play and lots of swirling wind noise. This has been omitted from this presentation. Track splits are mine and differ from New Homebrew's." Mileasian (Dime uploader) Taper's Notes (from A.K.): Not too bad of a recording, considering the situation. It all came back to me listening to it last night. The first couple tracks is Jeff getting ready to play. He took a while to get going and to engineer the sound. The third track is when he starts playing. You'll notice during the track that I'm switching back and forth from turning the attenuator on and off. I couldn't get any levels with it on but with it off the wind would be a big factor. What a dilemma!! Well, you'll see that I take the plunge... you can hear the wind but it's not that significant, I think. Lots of crowd interaction. I've always used two ECM-77b mics. They don't sound too bad. I remember seeing another DAT taper there except he had the full mic set up on stands, etc. I got his name but have long since lost it. I'll let you know when I have it ready to send off. The Buckley show was a free gig put on by the Student Body Union at UC Berkeley. Outdoors...and windy. I thought I could get away with switching the attenuator off, which I think was fine but the wind came in and kinda screwed it up...the wind actually distorts the mics if I recall. All in all, I think it was a good recording but I probably haven't listened to it in almost 7-8 years!! I hope all this is okay with you too. Oh yeah...recorded in LP mode. Milesian March 2005 NOTES Jeff performs an afternoon acoustic-show put on by the Student Body Union at University of California at Berkeley, outside the windy Sproul Plaza. The venue is a major center of student activity and the show is free given to students. Though it takes some time for Jeff to engineer the sound as he wants it and getting ready to play, he's in great mood, constantly interacting with the audience inbetween songs and making jokes all through the 40 minute long mini-set. The set starts off with an inspired 'Last Goodbye' after which he regretfully tells that "I'm fighting congestion." Jeff being shy, the overcrowded audience might have caused some kind of stagefright in him. "Are you all Berkeley people?" Before anyone could have answered Jeff did so, telling in a different voice tone "yeah, yeah, no, yes we are, no no... yes!" again causing much laughter in the audience. A bit later he remarks modestly that his song "is more like motifs, really." While tuning his guitar takes a bit more time than one could compensate, a girl shouts in to which Jeff immediately responds with returning it to the sender: "Hello!? I make an announcement for you if you want..." The following 'Lover, You Should Have Come Over' is carried out with just the same enthusiasm as the opening and by the end of the performance, the audience is left wondering in amazement. Before 'So Real' Jeff laments that he hopes "this thing is going to work." The song indeed works and features a spellbinding falsetto part at the end. Answering to a heckler that "Yeah we gonna punk out man... to that alternative thing," he suddenly starts to cover Stone Temple Pilots famous 1992 hit 'Plush' to much surprisement of the crowd. Then a bit later sings once "Hey man...", a snippet from David Bowie's 1972 song 'Suffragette City'. Still by the time Jeff starts 'Mojo Pin' the audience is reduced to complete silence all through its mere six minute run. The last song is preceded with another lenghty guitar tuning and Jeff acknowledges that "I know I'm not about to sing this motherfucker but I'm gonna do that anyway...." then adds that "I think I need to do now is to drink all my cappucino with all the milk in it and drown with some water..." then after introducing his band, he chats some with the audience then invites the crowd to join him during the evening show at the Great American Music Hall: "Believe I'll be better tonight if you care to come by at the Great American Music Club" then one of his mates adds that it's already sold-out. "Oh, yeah that's right it's sold-out. Sorry! Fuck. I'm sorry. ... Yeah I know why show up to the... you know all the mess when you see this shit for free?" Meanwhile tuning his guitar he realizes that he's swearing infront of an underage boy and adds "I'm sorry I'm cursing infront of a small child, I'm sorry. ... You'll learn to do it soon enough my dear." After an almost 4 minute break since the last song played, the appearently modest Jeff asks, "Am I sound chicken?" then suddenly leaves the question away and adds, "Ok, wish me luck. It's called Grace." The beginning of the song is performed with extreme care both on guitar and on vocal but during halfway Jeff breaks the ice by pulling some occasional jokes. Still he finishes the song with a forceful approach of high and powerful falsettos then saying goodbye seemingly still being elevated by the performance. "Thank you everybody! Thank you very much! Now you gotta go to the class... This is Matt Johnson, people! Thanks very much! Mick Grondahl," adds "unplugged! Michael Tighe - of course, young Patrick Swayze... Thank you very much!" -Buda --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JEFF BUCKLEY July 13 (Thursday), 1995 Ludwigsburg, Scala, Germany DISC I 01. I received this lovely piece in a trade few days ago (thanks Niko!) It's a great performance and show of Jeff & band with a kick ass setlist in my opinion. I love the intro to Kick Out The Jams. I attached a small mp3 sample for you to check out the sound. This is how i received it, so I'm sorry but i cannot provide any source info and i don't know why Hallelujah is a bit cut at the end (no other tracks are cut!) and why there are some fade in/outs at the beginning/end of some songs especially on Disc 2, it's just how i received it. Maybe someone could help us out with this and provide us with some source info. Any help on this and any artwork would be much appreciated. Also a big "thank you" goes out to Phil for answering some stupid questions i had :-)" NOTES Jeff's alt. lyrics before 'Hallelujah': "It's not the bottle. It's not the pills. It's not the face of strangers who will offer you their lines and hot needles. It's not the time you were together in their place. So perfect. Like a second home. And it's not from the Bible. It's not from angels. Not from preachers who are chased and understanding of nothing that is human in this world. It's for people who are lovers. It's for people who have been lovers. However the last track, Forget Her was the correct speed as far as I could tell and therefore was left as is and just the date changed (from 1995 on the artwork). Also the disc I have was sent to me with a CDr version that had been remastered in some unspecified way (though not pitch corrected) and I cannot recall if I used the one or the other in this transfer. Either way this represents a quantum leap in listening pleasure compared to the widely circulated slow version. Enjoy it all as if for the first time. The setlist includes passionate performances one after the other and surprises as well though things didn't start to take off instantly. The audience is so exhaustive that it quickly becomes irritating for Jeff who suddenly stops after a minute during the opener ’Mood Swing Whiskey’ and taunts the crowd: â€You not even know the song, so shut the fuck-up!†After ’Last Goodbye’ Jeff got in some banters with the members from the crowd. â€Maybe we have a holy cat in this house. I tried to be Jimmy as possible but it didnt work...†Mick Grondahl features on 'Edna Frau' in a new role: singing vocals. Buda NOTES After leaving three successful shows behind in Tokyo, Jeff moves 1,100 kms away to play a gig at Skala Espacio, a multi-purpose space located in Fukuoka City. Various events such as talk shows, movie screenings, plays, exhibitions and moreover, concerts are held here. The hall is capable of accommodating 400 people, which is just around what Jeff favours in terms of reaching an intimateness with the crowd that bigger venues lack. He constantly chats inbetween songs and his repertoire is filled with improvisations resulting another colorful and exciting show on this tour. The band kicks off with a haunting 'Dream Brother' which immediately sets the atmosphere. Jeff's singing is inspired 'Grace' is full of energy and the band clearly enjoy playing it. By his own performance, Jeff encourages his mates to rock even more and by the second half all of them were now picking on the same route, getting into the whirl of Jeff's falsetto-cultivated hard-boiled pure rock and roll. After the boisterous performance, while tuning the guitar, he welcomes the crowd: "Oaahhh.... Hello Fukuoka! ... Fukuokau...how do you say? I know all the naked words you know you supposed to know but don't know much else. Like why is this belt 75 dollars...why is this coke 35 dollars? It's hard to explain." The following 'What Will You Say' is a stellar performance on its own with all the members putting everything in the performance. The song ends unusally with Jeff improvising on guitar - instead of singing the tune out. 'Last Goodbye' starts straight away and with great commitment. After introducing the band, 'So Real' countinues to cause some heat in the venue with Jeff's clearly possessed self seizing the audience. Before the next song, Jeff explains his songs at some level: "See, we started off with 'Dream Brother' which is something that me came out come together probably for the first time when we're all three together. Then there was 'Grace' which I wrote with my friend Gary Lucas. What is you don't know or most of you don't know of about 'What Will You Say' that it was written by Chris Dowd from Fishbone. You know Fishbone?"* A few moments later Jeff countinues with 'Lover, You Should've Come Over' which is appearently as bluesier as ever with an equally emphasised vocal. During the first half of the song, Jeff's guitar playing is rich with licks that invokes the mannerisms typical of Jimi Hendrix's. The band dives into 'Mojo Pin' with enthusiasm, getting over it quickly, making it a bit shorter than used to. 'Eternal Life' ends with a startling 'feedback' rendition of the US anthem. It lasts for a mere minute and is probably the only recorded version of the song by Jeff caught on tape. After some fun while taking back the stage for the encore, Jeff remarks: "This is my first time to Japan. Very first time... and it's quite a different experience." "What is it like?" someone asks from the crowd. "Its like a huge massive tinpig... you mean like the audiences ...or the city? The city is cold, you dont get to see much. You been walking around and everything closes so early and its a drag. So you just end up going to the 24-hour market and get some awful race... but the audiences are like these huge New York caffes with manners. If you listen, you guys LISTEN. People in New York tend to have a drink. It's very nice. It's good. Thank you!" Then adds "It is also like the cleanest state I've ever seen in my life. Anybody in a band? Anybody has a band in the audience? Nobody? If you go to LA or go to New York and you're brought onstage, it's just covered with SHIT. Its tapes and burden and other dead performers that ever has been worked there in the wood after so many years." Surprisingly he chooses not to sing any of his Nina Simone interpretations tonight but instead, in a suddenness he turns out a clear-cut rendition of Bob Dylan's 'Mama You Been On My Mind' before launching into a spellbinding version of 'Hallelujah' which the stunned audience leaves completely uninterrupted by any means of sound or talk. - Buda *In 1994, right before Fishbone was dropped by its label Sony Records, keyboardist Chris Dowd left the band and then recorded with a band including Jeff Buckley under the name "Seedy Arkestra", releasing the album The Puzzle. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JEFF BUCKLEY February 15 (Wednesday), 1995 Paris, Velvet Jungle, France Mistery White Boy European and Japanese Tour 1995 (January 14 - March 5, 1995) 01 Dream Brother 6:33 02 So Real 5:29 03 Last Goodbye 5:05 04 Mojo Pin 7:13 05 Grace 5:34 06 Eternal Life 8:01 Total running time: 37:55 SOURCE Excellent Soundboard recording ~TOP LIVE TV BROADCAST SOUNDTRACK~ Lineage: "Black Session" bootleg CD>CDR(1)>EAC>Steinberg Wavelab DC offset check (no correction needed) and make one .wav file from 7 original tracks>Retrack in CDWave with cuts on sector boundaries>FLAC (8) Uploaded by New Homebrew TECHNICAL: The original show did not have sector boundary errors. The chapter stops were just not always at the beginning of the songs, so that was fixed. Also, some websites list a seventh song called "Final Farewell", this is just a minute of feedback and reverb washes after Eternal Life, which is on here and just comes at the end of Eternal Life without a separate chapter stop. SHOW: When researching this set, I found many different names for the venue. Some list it as "Velvet Jungle", "TOP Live", or "Arte TV". They are all the soundtrack to the French television broadcast performance. If anyone has the video please get in touch so we can synch this excellent quality audio to it. This is the complete show containing 'Eternal Life' & The Smiths/Leonard Cohen combo, 'I Know It's Over'/'Hallelujah'. The licenced attendance was again 80,000, although the fence was pulled down, in effect making it a free festival for anyone who wanted to join the fun. This is their first appearance here and even by Jeff standards, it is thought to be an important gig introducing his music to the wider European audience. They perform at the Pyramid Stage, which is the home to headliners since 1971 here at the festival. If the pressure wouldn't be enough, the backstage is packed with other big names from the music world. Not everyone can get up and sing something they take a liking to and make it their own, sing true to their heart and be curious about all different strains of music. Corpus Christi Carol was a completely conceived interpretation. I'd never heard the piece before and when I heard the original I realized what Jeff had done was even more amazing. He'd taken it into his own world. That's something my favorite classical musicians can do, be themselves but use all that expertise to make the music more beautiful. Jeff did that naturally. Only a handful of people are capable of that. I was amazed when he did Meltdown. I asked him what he wanted to sing and he said he'd like to do one of Mahler's Kindertotenlieder in the original German! Absolutely fucking fearless. He was convinced he could sing it without rehearsal, just because he liked it. In the end he did a Purcell song, Dido's Lament, which is in danger of sounding incredibly poignant in retrospect: 'Remember me but forget my fate'. But he also sang Boy With the Thorn In His Side because he liked it, and Grace to show something of himself. When he started singing Dido's Lament at the rehearsal, there were all these classical musicians who could not believe it. Here's a guy shuffling up on-stage and singing a piece of music normally thought to be the property of certain types of specifically developed voice, and he's just singing, not doing it like a party piece, but doing something with it. My last memory of him was at the little party in the green room afterwards. There were all these people sitting round Jeff who'd never met before - Fretwork, the viol group, a classical pianist and some jazz player - all talking and laughing about music. He'd charmed everybody. I'd much rather remember that than anything." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JEFF BUCKLEY December 17 (Sunday), 1995 New York, Idiot's Delight - WXRK FM, USA Introduction Louis Jordan - Saturday Night Fish Fry Talking/Interlude MC5 - Rocket Reducer #62 (Rama Lama Fa Fa Fa) Talking Screaming Jay Hawkins - Alligator Wine So Real Talking/Interlude 01 Lover, You Should've Come Over 7:33 02 I Woke Up In A Strange Place 7:30 Talking Last Goodbye (Album version) Nina Simone - I Want A Little Sugar In My Bowl Bonus track: 03 Strange Fruit (Billie Holiday) 4:59 Total running time: 20:02 SOURCE Unreleased and unofficial fanclub compilation & also accompanying a book A Voice to Hold in the Dark, 2000 Tracks 01-02: 1995-12-17 - 'Idiots Delight', WXRK Radio, New York, New York, America Track 03: 1994-01-25 - 'Man on the Moon', 89.9 KCRW, Santa Monica, California, America NOTES from www.flowersintime.org: ------------------------------------------------------ There may be 2 versions of this circulating. 1) complete, and 2) from 'Lover You Should've Come Over' onwards Jeff Buckley - Dec 17 1995 on WXPK (K-Rock), NY with Vin Scelza. I met Jeff during the time when he was doing shows in NYC with guitarist Gary Lucas. The night we met they were performing at some benefit show at Tramps. This was before the release of Live at Sin-e (EP, 1993) or his debut album grace (1994). I had heard reports about Jeff's performances, but have never heard anyone sing like he did that night (except for the inevitable eerie comparison to his father, Tim Buckley, who died when Jeff was still a very young child). When I was introduced to him by Gary, for some reason I expected he would be painfully shy or terrribly cocky. He was neither (well, maybe a bit shy). He was warm, gracious, funny and very humble about his talent (all of which is evidenced in this archive recording). I asked him to come up on the show, but it took almost two years - and major changes in Jeff's professional life - for this visit to happen. Before coming into the studio on this December night, I invited Jeff to thumb through my record and CD collection and pick out some things for us to play. Everything up to thi Nina Simone recording was Jeff's pick - some fun stuff! He only perfomed two songs, the second being an untitled "work-in-progress" that he had jotted the lyrics to in a notebook, a song which would see release on the posthumous live album Mystery White Boy, in 2000. He peformed alone. Listening to this recording for the first time in 8 years, as I prepared it for the Be My Guest archives, I found myself both delighted by this man's boyish humour and ebullience and saddened once more by the loss so many of us still feel when thinking of Jeff... how his life was cut so short by the cruel fate of his drowning accident in Memphis, May 1997. Being a novice at the time (this was perhaps my first DAT recording) I transfered the tape to CDR at 48khz causing it to sound lower in pitch. I only gave the slow speed CDR copy to one or two people so somehow down the line, years later, it appeared. This show was fun because it was basically for friends as Mercury is such a small intimate place. One of my friends at this show was drinking with Jeff the night before causing the pre New Year's Eve hangover. The big guy in front of me thought I was lighting a joint when I was trying to turn off the LED light on the DAT player. He also screamed "YES!!!!" before "The Other Woman", he was a huge R&B and Nina Simone fan. I've left in all the in between song banter from the crowd and from Jeff as it really is great evidence to how people react to music.... It's so varied really and I'm always amazed when I go to shows how some people just talk the whole time regardless of what's going on onstage. I'm the silent type at shows as I just want to focus on the music but to each his/her own. In the grand memory of my New York years, this has to be a high point and certainly my friends and I were so shocked to learn of his passing. I think I shut the door on listening to Jeff after that just to avoid the sadness. But it was a real pleasure digging the DAT out of the box and going thru the transfer process again (this time at the right speed). Stay tuned as I have some other things in the vault you JB fans might be interested in. Something from the Sine days. Happy New Year! ... I was impressed that he was able to play Auld Lang Syne on only two strings because when Jeff broke one string during kick out the jams, he proceeded to break 2 others just for fun! I'm sure he could floor the audience on one string so it didn't matter. Luckily, his friend handed him his backup guitar, an Ibanez Talman I think which was strange to see Jeff play. His friend changed the strings on his trusted blonde Tele and got it back to him a few songs later as I recall. So great everyone is enjoying this and thanks for giving me the kind words and encouragement to put this source up. Parker Kindred debuted as Jeff's new drummer and made his only public performance with the band there on February 9th, 1997. This show is also significant because a bootlegged recording exists of this show. Only two known versions exist of this song. The version without vocals from the Babylon Dungeon sessions and the one which was later revisited and recorded in a rehearsal at The Knitting Factory, NY, in May of 1993, with an early try-out combo of bassist Tom Goodkind (of The Washington Squares) and drummer John McNally. That version is included only on the UK release Grace: 10th Anniversary Legacy Edition. "I realized I probably wouldn't ever have another chance to pay my respects, no matter what kind of twisted feelings I have about Tim, no matter what kind of pain or anger I have against him--whatever I haven't come to terms with. The fact that I never got to go to his funeral always bothered me. And I thought, I can sink down with this or I can get off it, and then whatever sort of development I've gone through, at least I've done that." Asked to go back and do one more song at the end of the tribute show, Jeff reluctantly went out and sang Tim's "Once I Was." "It was the first song my mother ever played me by Tim," he explains. "After she left my stepfather, I guess she wanted to get me into who my father was and she played me 'Once I Was.' So I learned it. It was hard to learn it. I couldn't do a really full version of it at home without crying. I almost cried onstage. I broke a string onstage at the end of that song. They were brand new strings. I was really pissed. I felt embarrassed about the whole thing. I just felt really open and vulnerable. There's such a ravenous cult around Tim and you know how people are. I mean, if people learned they could recreate Jim Morrison from his ancient bone marrow they'd fucking do it." -- Jeff Buckley ('The Arrival of Jeff Buckley: A Talented Young Musician Learns to Navigate the Record Business While Protecting His Music', Bill Flanagan, Musician, February 1994, p97-101) Information from flowers in time database - http://www.flowersintime.org --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JEFF BUCKLEY August 17 (Saturday), 1991 New York, Krypton Studio, New York, USA 01 Mojo Pin 4:40 02 Grace 4:15 03 Bluebird Blues 9:29 Total running time: 18:24 NOTES Recorded at Krypton Studios. 'She's Free' - Originally written with Gary Lucas for their collaborative album 'Songs to No One', under the name of 'Gods and Monsters' 'Dink's Song' - Traditional blues song, attributed to the song collectors John/Alan Lomax. A lady named Dink sang the song for John Lomax in 1908. Jeff in turn learnt this version from listening to a version on a Bob Dylan bootleg, who known to have jokingly said he learnt it also from a lady named Dink. (tho it seems improbable he would have had any contact with that generation) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "About a year after the Tim Buckley tribute, on March 13, 1992, Gods & Monsters had a big showcase concert at St. Ann's during which the sound was bad and each fine musician onstage seemed to be listening only to himself. After that performance Jeff told Lucas he was quitting; he would play the rest of the gigs they had booked that week and that was it. Jeff Buckley's final show with Gods & Monsters, to a small audience at the Knitting Factory the following weekend, was filled with tension and barely contained recriminations. One song into the set Buckley told the soundman, "Let's hear Jeff's guitar," and proceeded to hijack Lucas' band for the remainder of the night. As Jeff led the group, Lucas filled in piercing guitar leads and counterpoint. Jeff let loose howling, primal vocals that were, ironically, like the young Robert Plant while Lucas--relieved of leading the group-- played with disciplined abandon, raising the stakes at every hand. It was an amazing set, everything that the St. Ann's showcase had failed to be. It took the grim relief of failure and the anger of a breakup to show what the musical prototype for Lucas to Buckley should have been--not Page to Plant, but James Honeyman-Scott to Chrissie Hynde. One scene-maker leaned over duing the set and said, "If all the A&R people who'd been at St. Ann's were here tonight, these guys would be going home with a record deal." When the last Gods & Monsters song ended, Maimone, Fier and Lucas walked offstage but Buckley hesitated. He then surprised everyone--including himself--by staying onstage and continuing to sing alone. It was a bravura, egotistical move, a violation of all band etiquette, and exactly the right thing to do to establish that he had the guts and the ambition to build his own vision, and that he was not going to be tied to anyone else on his way. When he finished singing, Jeff walked off the stage and across the room to his girlfriend Rebecca. They locked into an embrace in the middle of the club, his head buried in her shoulder, not speaking and oblivious to the people who came up to tell him what a great finale it had been. "It was after that night," Jeff says of quitting Gods & Monsters, "that I knew I needed to invoke the real essence of my voice. I didn't know what it tasted like at all. I knew I had to get down to work and that anything else would be a distraction. In that band there were conflicts. It was really crazy, a desperate situation. I just didn't need things to be desperate. I needed them to be natural." (misdated - should be 1993-12-18) Information from the 'Flowers in Time' database - http://www.flowersintime.org NOTES At the very end of 1993, Jeff Buckley spends the last weekend before Christmas at the legendary CBGB's club in New York City. Accompanied with Matt Johnson and Mick Grondhal he introduced his relatively young band by giving a rather inspired, joyful and often surprising but a very energetic performance. 'Forget Her' debuts tonight, freshly elevated from Bearsville recording studios where Jeff spent quiet some time during the previous months recording 'Grace'. It remains the only known live performace of the song which at its stages Jeff was probably unsatisfied with. There is much controversy as to whether Jeff ever wanted this track released - he intentionally left it off Grace, and his comments where left open to interpretation as to whether he'd use it again. It appeared first in the Grace Legacy Edition, and then as the last track on a new release of Grace in 2004. The rather rare and amazing full-band version of Van Morrison's 'The Way Young Lovers Do' is terrific. Jeff plays the song like its his own and the band remarkably accompany him all through a mere quarter hour. 'Eternal Life' gets a long intro and arrives with its full flame just in time and explodes many times with full vigour. "Thats all people! Good night! See you next time! This is Matt Johnson! Large spike at 15.8kHz. Ripped, FLAC'd and collated by eclect - http://db.etree.org/eclect NOTES Live at Sin-e Tour, solo. The female vocal on the 'Sweet Thing' duet was a young unknown college student, Jamie Blake, who later sang lead vocals for band Vixtrola. Here is an email she sent about the event: "I was a college student at the time at American University in D.C. I was also the music editor of a paper there called the University Reporter that went to 60,000 school kids in the area. I had an especially good relationship with a local rep from Sony. They were really pushing me to do an article on Jeff. They sent me "live at sine," and at first I didnt get it, but agreed to meet him at a dinner before the Black Cat show at Dantes. As it turned out one of my college professors at school was his opening act, a solo artist named Mark Helm. He was mentoring my songwriting. The two of them met at soundcheck that night, and Mark must have told Jeff about me. The dinner at Dantes was for local press, all women. The label was working his beauty factor. He really was beautiful. I was sitting at the opposite end of the table from Jeff. The table was long with about 15 women around it. I hadn't said a word, everyone was rifling questions at him. I was drifting into space when he calls out, "who here is the musician?" I said nothing, thinking of course he doesn't mean me. He then said again, holding a glass of red wine, "who here is a musician," I think I raised my hand, and managed a squeaky "me." With that he made the women next to him move out of the way and called me to sit next to him. Everyone was still there, but for the rest of the night we only spoke with each other. He had an amazing ability to make you feel special, like the only one in the room. At some point I realized my friend was going on the stage soon, so I got up to leave, and Jeff said he wanted to come too. We left everyone behind, and walked to the venue together. It was probably only a two block walk, and I remember every word of the conversation. He was telling me about how he got signed, talking about his skull and bones necklace, about great music in general, continuing our conversation from the restaurant. He asked me if I would come on stage later and sing with him. I had a very limited musical education at the time, and we couldn't find a song we knew in common. Sooooo, he said you're going to sing "sweet thing" with me, and just wing it. Repeat after me or something. So I sat to watch Mark perform, Jeff thought he was brilliant, I remember him paying close attention to the lyrics, and commenting on them. Mark is an amazing lyricist, they actually ran into each other later, overseas, and Jeff was wonderful to him. Jeff went on, and I "got" it. From then on listening to Live at Sine wasn't enough for me, I wanted the album. Smile We all hung out for a while, playing pinball, drinking red wine, gab gab gab. When he was on, he was "on," very funny, and animated. We kept in loose touch. I moved to NY, transferred schools, soon after. I wanted to get my music thing going. I called him, and even though he was getting ready to go out on the road again, he was super sweet about telling me what to do and where to go in NY. I flew to D.C. to see him play the black cat again when everyone else went to woodstock to play in the mud. We had a repeat night at Dantes, he was bummed he had lost his skull and bones necklace, he kept singing Joni Mitchell into my ear, "you and I are always flirting, flirting," he went on and on about how he looked like luke perry and how it annoyed him, and he heard people saying it, and that he was growing his hair out and his stubble to combat it, and at the end of the night gave me an innocent kiss on the lips before he put me in a cab. A kiss on the lips that made my knees weak. It was definitely innocent for him, just friendly, but I thought I would pass out. I was so blown away by his talent I went to see him play whenever I could. In all I only saw him play five times though. For the third show I found myself backstage at Fez with Jeff, Craig Weidren (of shudder to think), and chris cornell. one of them said something and Jeff said, "id rather masturbate with a seahorse." thats the line that stuck out because it was easy to remember, but he was happier than I had ever seen him that night, and his quick wit in rare form. its fun to see someone in such a great head space, its contagious. The next and last time I spoke with him he was tired from the road, he used to tell me that his voice was only getting stronger on the road, and that night he was saying that he was having some vocal problems, and some major back problems, he had a masseuse at the venue, and was completely exhausted. I saw him again but I was with music biz people that dragged me mid show to another venue. I know that he had many great performances after that but i was in the studio for my own stuff, and never got to speak with him again. i was heartbroken when I got the news. He really was so warm, such a good person, a deep soul, and of course brilliantly talented. I cant help but tear up when I really stop to remember, and feel lucky for the chance to have met him. Not to be dramatic but now that i think about it, ive met a lot of artists since then, none of them can match his spirit. thats the story." -- Jamie Blake (email to Clare O'Brien, 'Always Remembered' Jeff Buckley Forum) Information from the 'Flowers in Time' database - http://www.flowersintime.org --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JEFF BUCKLEY February 24 (Thursday), 1994 Philadelphia, 'World Cafe Radio', WXPN National Public Radio, Pennsylvania, USA - North American Live At Sin-é Solo Tour 1994 (January 15, 1994 - March 5, 1994) - 01 Intro 4:18 02 Grace 6:44 03 Interview 2:31 04 Mojo Pin 6:21 05 Interview 1:19 06 Lover, You Should've Come Over 7:10 07 Interview 1:09 08 Outro 0:35 Total running time: 30:07 NOTES Jeff's solo performance.
