I was the happiest girl around when this arrived in the mail -- an excellent audience recording of the elusive Dave Rawlings Machine. This set surpasses soundboard quality in terms of enjoyability, imo.

For those who don't know, David Rawlings is Gillian Welch's longtime collaborator, and one of the best guitarists going. While he normally plays behind Gil, at Machine shows he takes the lead, with Gil accompanying. These shows have taken place in small venues, often unannounced, and feature covers as well as some unreleased original material. Definitely a treat -- don't miss an appearance if you get the chance. My most sincere thanks to H2Oface for sharing this. If anyone else has recorded the Machine, please step up! They've been performing "White Rabbit" and "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" -- I'd love to hear either.

Recording and lineage details from H2Oface, who so generously made this recording available:

"1970's Beyer M-500 dynamic German ribbon microphone, monaural setting, about 17 feet from the stage, 4 feet off center to the left as you look at the stage, elevated 8 feet > Sound Devices 722 digital recorder to hard drive @ 24 bit/48 kHz > Bias Peak to convert to 16 bit/44.1 KHz > Cool Edit Pro 2.0 > CD Wave Editor.

"very warm recording....
at times the bass from gillian's guitar is a bit prominent....
but you can adjust that on your player.

"recording was stopped after first track for some adjustments - track two starts with dialogue in progress... no music missed but some dialogue. also during applause after Elvis Presley Blues a new file was started so you can very breifly (maybe) hear an edit point - the applause was cut short a bit. no set break was taken, as the venue was so small and packed, there was nowhere to go."
