| Note | A pretty repetitive collection of outtakes from the sessions for the band's best record. The recordings have survived very well, and the sound quality is excellent. My track listing it slightly different, with alternate song titles for some of the tracks, but the line-up is the same. These renditions are very hit or miss. Even an amazing song like Acrobat sounds primitive and weak here, played in a different key and with a different arrangement and lyrics. She's Gonna Turn Your Head Around has the makings of a great tune, but the only solid rendition here abandons the melody and lyrics hinted at on the other versions while and Bono substitues primal lyrics for Wake Up Dead Man instead. The worst stuff on here clearly shows how fucking horrible Bono's voice is without the layers of reverb Brian Eno added during production, and there are moments on here that are downright embarassing. Completists might enjoy this more than I did, but even the most ardent fan will have to concede that there's nothing entirely essential on here. |
